Chapter 8: The Nerves System Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Parasympathetic
all neurons release the neurotransmitter acetylcholine
Autonomic nervous system
consists of motor neurons to visceral effectors which are smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glnads
Parasympathetic division
dominates in relaxed situations
Sympathetic division
dominates in stressful situations
Parasympathetic
few postganglionic neurons, to one effector
Sympathetic
many postganglionic neurons, which go to many effector
Parasympathetic
near or in the visceral effector
Sympathetic
neurotransmitters acetylcholine and norepinephrine are released
Hypothalamus
part of the brain that integrates the functioning of the ANS
Parasympathetic
preganglionic neuron in the brain and sacral spinal cord
Two divisions of the ANS
sympathetic and parasympathetic division
Sympathetic
thoracic and lumbar spinal cord
Sympathetic
two chains outside the spinal column
