Computer Chapter 9 Part 2
UNIX
Is a multitasking operating system developed in the early 1970'S. Unix is an operating system used by power users because of its flexibility and security. While it can be run on any sized computer, it is normally found on mainframes or large system servers.
Linux
Is a popular multitasking UNIX based operating system. Two appealing characteristics of Linux that make it very popular are 1) it is free and 2) it is open-source software, which means the source code is available to the public and the operating system can be modified or personalized by the user. You may also hear this operating system referred to as Red Hat. Red Hat, Inc. is the worlds largest distributor of open source programs including their own version of the Linux operating system.
Server System Operating Systems
Server operating systems have expanded functions that allows users to share resources on a network secured by a log on procedure by establishing a user name and password for each authorized user. They organize and coordinate how multiple users access and share resources on a network. The person that oversees the network operations and handles the users and devices on the network is the network administrator. Examples of network operating systems are listed above
Windows Phone
The last mobile system is a Windows Phone. Like iOS it is a proprietary system that can only be run on certain smartphones. Most of the phones are manufactured by Nokia but HTC and Samsung also manufacture phones which support Microsoft's operating system.
Chrome OS
The last of the desktop operating systems is Chrome OS. It was developed by Google using a Linux based operating system. This system is more streamlined than the other operating systems because it is only meant to open web based apps, such as Google Docs and Google Drive. Because of that the device will power up and shut down more quickly than the other operating systems and requires fewer hardware resources to run the computer
IOS
The second most common is iOS. This system was created by Apple and is a proprietary system that can only be used on phones manufactured by Apple. Like the desktop version this operating system is known for it's simplicity and ease of use.
Windows 8
Microsoft has released many versions of Windows over the years with the latest being Windows 8. In this version users click on and use apps rather than a start menu to open programs. This is also the first version Microsoft built meant to be used on tablet devices, touch interface. All previous versions were meant for desktop and laptops which used a mouse
Mobile Operating Systems
Mobile operating systems, also known as embedded operating systems, are systems on mobile devices that reside on a ROM chip, firmware, inside of the device. There are three types available for use today. There are other operating systems available but the three listed make up 98% of the global market. Example: Android, IOS, Windows Phone.
Macintosh
The second most common operating systems is Apple's Macintosh, Mac OS. Most other operating systems are modeled after the Mac OS. This system is widely known for being easy to use and very secure. Unfortunately it can only be used on computers manufactured by Apple
Desktop Operating System
is a complete operating system that works on desktops, laptops, and some tablets. These include windows, Mac OS, UNIX, ChromeOS, and Linux.
Android
is an open source, Linux-based mobile operating system designed by Google for smartphones and tablets
