10 keys to effective erosion and sediment control:

1. Disturb as little area as possible 2. Phase construction activities to better manage the site 3. Control storm water from flowing through the project 4. stabilize soils as soon as they are disturbed 5. protect all sloped with appropriate erosion controls 6. Protect storm drain inlets 7/ Establish perimeter barriers that control runoff 8. Prevent sediment from leaving the site 9. Stabilize and manage construction exits 10. Inspect protection measure often

Issues the on-site construction management team must concern itself with (6):

1. Job site safety 2. quality control 3. material and equipment deliveries 4. subcontractor coordination 5. productivity 6. Coordination with outside agencies (Utilities, water, sewage, electricity)

How construction impacts our surroundings (5):

1. Traffic 2. Noise 3. dust 4. dirty streets 5. Odors

Factors that the site logistics plan should take into account (8):

1. material storage and handling 2. job site security 3. site access 4. employee parking 5. traffic control 6. pedestrian safety 7. crane location 8. Miscellaneous facilities

Types of schedules (8):

1. project schedule 2. look ahead schedule 3. delivery schedule 4. crane schedule 5. Maintenance schedule 6. inspection schedule 7. turnover schedule 8. SIP- Short interval production schedule

Factors that contribute to choosing a schedule (7)

1. size of the company 2. volume of work 3. type of construction 4. project size 5. project complexity 6. computer capability 7. contract requirements

causes of lower productivity (9)

1.crowded work spaces 2. poor coordination of work activities 3. poor supervision or lack of supervision 4. inexperienced or poorly trained workforce 5. not having proper tools and equipment 6. adverse weather conditions 7. confusing plans or specs 8. changes in the work plan 9. Inefficient job site layout

The Primary focus of coordination meetings is to (6)...

1.review work progress 2. update changes in the schedule 3. discuss potential interface conflicts 4. share information regarding equipment and personnel requirements 5. address any discrepancies in the plans and specs 6. clarify any procedural questions

Baseline Schedule

A set of dates and costs frozen at the start of the project and used as a basis for performance evaluation as the project progresses

Milestone:

An event to mark specific points in time along a project timeline. These points may signal anchors such as a project start and end date, a need for external review or input and budget checks, among others. In many instances, milestones do not impact project duration. Instead, they focus on major progress points that must be reached to achieve success.

Backward Pass (Backward Plan)

Critical path calculation process which having calculated earliest date for activities on the network. Works backwards to find activities latest start and finish dates/float

EPA

Enviormental Protection Agency

Float

Float is the amount of time that an activity in a project network can be delayed without causing a delay to: Subsequent tasks (free float) or the project completion date (total float)

What are daily feild reports?

Formal piece of document with basic required information to address daily project status and activity

Two most common types of schedules?

Gannt charts and network diagrams

Who is responsible for material and equipment deliveries?

General Contractor (GC)

What should subcontractor meetings be about?

Hearing excuses and take it away. fix their excuses.

What delays construction from starting?

Not enough people on job because they're on other jobs

4 types of activity relationships

Physical, Safety, Resource, Preferential

Keys to successful subcontractor coordination

Proper scheduling , preparation and planning

Who represents the company leadership in the field?

Superintendent

Who should direct the coordination meetings and facilitate the groups interactions?

Superintendent

Total Float

The amount of leeway available to start or complete an individual schedule activity before it affects the planned project completion.

Forward Pass:

The first step in the CPM scheduling algorithm, the forward pass calculates each activity's early start and early finish date

network Logic

The order in which activities are sequenced in the network diagram relative to their interdependent relationships

Administrative Activities

These activities are mostly associated with contract administration tasks such as permitting, submittals, inspections, and testing.

Procurement Activities

These activities are primarily associated with obtaining materials and equipment for the project.

Production Activities

These activities identify tasks that are associated with the physical building of the project.

Late Start (LS)

This is the latest time that an activity can start without delaying the project's completion as planned

Resource Relationships

Work activities that need the same resource and both activities cannot be completed by the same recourse. Ex: where the subcontractor has only one crew, so they cannot work on multiple levels at the same time

Physical relationship

Work activities that require the predecessor activity to be completed before the successor activity can be competed. Ex: Footing excavation must take place before placing the concrete in the footing

Safety Relationships

Work activities that would be unsafe or cause a safety hazard if completed at the same time. Ex: performing roofing while another subcontractor is doing work below them.

Preferential relationship

Work activities where the contractor and subcontractor have a prefered way or sequence of performing their work together. Ex: painting the walls first, then install the flooring, and then install and paint the trim

What is Attractive Nuisance?

a legal term that applies to a dangerous condition or object on a property that can attract children and harm them, even if they trespass

3 types of activities that must be planned and included in the schedule

administrative, procurement, and production. Most schedules include all 3

Inspection agencies can..

bring your work to a standstill

Some production activities do not actually require any physical effort...

but do take time

the most critical components of managing construction operations?

coordinating inspections and agency approvals

productivity is all about...

expectations

Job safety and Quality control...

go hand in hand

Once the product or piece of equipment arrives at the job site...

it is important to make sure that someone is there to receive the order.

testing and inspection agencies also...

must be scheduled and coordinated by GC

Inspection agencies have...

no contractual agreement with you

General Contractor (GC) is responsible for...

overall project schedule and track and managing progress in accordance with that schedule

proper inspection at the time of delivery will...

prevent the problem of arguing with the suppliers later

cost and schedules are determined by....

productivity

job site layout contributes to...

project productivity and profitability

In the current market, what is the most challenging part?

scheduling and coordination material deliveries

whoever receives the merchandise...

should thoroughly inspect it and make sure it is correct as ordered and free from defects or damage

SWPPP (SWP3)

storm water pollution prevention plan

Effective schedules must have...

subcontractor input. without subcontractor input it is impossible to have an accurate project schedule

Construction Operations

the actual work that it takes to build the project

Free Float

the amount of time that spans from the completion of one previously scheduled activity and extends to the point at which the next scheduled activity is set to begin

Early Start (ES)

the earliest time an activity can start

Early Finish

the earliest time that an activity can finish given its allocated duration

the worst case scenario is...

the product error or defect is discovered as you are ready to install the material. a lot of time and energy will be wasted because of poor material management.

Planning and scheduling building inspection is...

the responsibility of the GC and multiple subs

Late Finish (LF)

this is the latest time that an activity can finish without delaying the project's completion as planned

what is the Superintendents job?

to work with and get things done through other people, primarily subcontractors
