Predicate Adjective Ex:

The pizza smelled delicious. (Delicious describes pizza)

Phrase

A group of words, without a subject and verb, that act as one part of speech

Predicate Nominative Ex:

Jackson became a SUPERSTAR. (Superstar renames Jackson)

Indirect Object Ex:

The clerk sold ME the wrong size. (Sold to whom? To me)

Indirect Object

A noun or pronoun that appears with a direct object and names the person or thing that something is given to or done for

Predicate Nominative

A noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames, identifies, or explains the subject of a sentence

Direct Object

A noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that recieves the action of a transitive verb

Adjective Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun by telling what kind or which one

Adverb Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb by pointing out where, when, in what manner, or to what extent

Predicate Adjective

An adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject of the sentence

Objective Complement

An adjective, noun, or group of words acting as a noun that follows a direct object and describes or renames it

Direct Object Ex:

Marge and Steve played CROQUET. (Played what? Croquet)

Compound Direct Object

More than one noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that receives the action of the same transitive verb

Objective Complement Ex:

The gift made me HAPPY. (Made me what? Happy)

Adjective Phrase Ex:

The woman WITH THE TAN BRIEFCASE is the mayor. (Which woman?)

Compound Indirect Object

Two or more nouns or pronouns that appear with a direct object and names the person or thing that something is given to or done for

Adverb Phrase Ex:

We went INTO TOWN. (Went where?)
