Plantar flexion

Extend the ankle and elevate the heel, stand on tiptoe

Hyperextension

Extension past anatomical position

Dorsiflexion

Flexion of the ankle and elevation of the sole, dig in your heel

Angular Motion

Flexion, Extension, Hyperextension, Abduction, Adduction, Circumduction

Linear motion

Forward/backward movement and left/right movement, example gliding motion

Special Movements

Inversion, Eversion, Dorsiflexion, Plantar Flexion, Opposition, Protraction, Retraction, Depression, Elevation, Lateral flexion

Move head

Left and right rotation

Dynamic Motion

Linear, Angular, Rotation

Move a limb

Medial or lateral rotation, moving a limb inward or outward

Rotational movement

Move the head, Move a limb, Pronation, Supination

Monaxial

Movement along one axis

Triaxial

Movement along three axes

Biaxial

Movement along two axes

Abduction

Movement away from the longitudinal axis of the body, example arms moving from side up to form a T

Extension

Movement in the anterior/posterior plane; increases the angle between the articulating elements; Standing erect

Flexion

Movement in the anterior/posterior plane; reduces the angle between the articulating elements, example bicep curls

Adduction

Movement towards the longitudinal axis of the body, example arms moving from T formation down to rest at sides

Pronation

Movement when radius rolls across the rounded surface of the ulnar head

Angular motion

Movements that change the angle between the object and the articular surface; example circumduction complex angular motion

Protraction

Moving part of the body anteriorly in the horizonal plane, moving jaw forward to bite lip

Retraction

Moving part of the body posteriorly in the horizontal plane, moving jaw from biting lip back to normal position

Circumduction

Moving your arm in a loop

Supination

Reverse movement of pronation; radius returns to its anatomical position; carrying soup

Rotation

Spin the object around its longitudinal axis

Elevation

Structure moves in a superior direction, closing jaw to close mouth

Depression

Structure moves in an inferior direction, dropping jaw to open mouth

Opposition

The thumb movement that enables us to grasp objects

Lateral flexion

The vertebral column bends to one side

Inversion

Twist the foot inward

Eversion

Twist the foot outward

Gliding

Two surfaces slide past one another
