Describe the comparable worth controversy?

Although a comparable worth pay system may help eliminate wage discrimination, many economists are critical of such a pay system. They argue there are many subtle differences between jobs that help explain wage differentials that have nothing to do with discrimination. Economists do not deny the negative consequences associated with discrimination. But, they do argue that a bureaucratically administered comparable worth pay system may offer little, if any improvement. Most economists favor other methods to address discrimination.

Describe the advantages that a negative income tax has over other programs that have the same purpose.

First, a negative income tax is less costly to administer than other poverty-fighting programs because it can be administered routinely by the IRS. Second, it avoids the stigma of handouts. Finally, it actually creates an incentive to work because the more income earned, the higher is the household's after-tax income.

Make a case for income inequality

First, by rewarding people for their productivity by paying them wages equal to their MRPs, people have the incentive to work and improve their skills. Since MRPs vary, people must receive different wage rates, even though this will lead to income inequality. Second, because the rich can afford to save a higher percentage of their income than can the poor, they tend to do the economy's investing, thus generating economic growth that benefits everyone.
