What are the different types of essays?
Argumentative/Persuasive: Genre of writing that requires to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. Synthesis: A synthesis essay is a written work that takes a unique viewpoint about a central idea, theme, or topic, and backs it up with a combination of multiple sources. Informative: An informative essay educates your reader on a topic. Rhetorical Precis: Four sentence paragraph/summary about a body of text
What does CWI stand for?
C- Claim (Stance; Opinion) W- Warrant (Evidence) I- Impact (Why does this matter?)
What is a counterclaim and refutation?
Counterclaim: a claim made to rebut a previous claim. Refutation: proving a statement or theory to be wrong or false.
What are the rhetorical devices?
Ethos-credibility; trust; appealing to an expert in the field (EX: "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.") Pathos-appeals to emotions (EX: Animal shelters showing abused animals to make the watcher feel empathy for the animals and donate money) Logos-Using logic/facts/statistics (EX: "History has shown time and again that absolute power corrupts absolutely.")
What are the 3 I's of Oppression?
Institutional: affects system (Government, segregation) Interpersonal: between two people (Racial slurs, attacking someone's identity, etc) Internalized: Keeping yourself down (Insecurities)
What is the intended audience and author's purpose?
Intended audience defined as the group of people for which a service or product is designed. Author's purpose reason or intent in writing; may be to amuse the reader, to persuade the reader, to inform the reader, or to satirize a condition.
What is the difference between a Main Idea and a theme?
Main Idea: What the story is about. Theme: The lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story.
What does PIE stand for and what does it do?
P- Persuade I- Inform E- Entertain This is the author's purpose to write the article.
What are some conversation discourse strategies?
Paraphrase- reword/summarize what the speaker said Build on an idea- Elaborate more on what the speaker said Ask a question- Ask for more clarification Negotiate an idea- when disagreeing be respectful
How do you write a Rhetorical Precis?
Sentence 1: Introduce the reading such as the title, genre of text, author, publication date, and also a thesis Sentence 2: Give an explanation of how the author develops & supports the thesis Sentence 3: Explain the author's purpose followed by an "in order to" phrase Sentence 4: Give a description of the intended audience and how the author establishes a relationship with the audience

What was "Confessions of Women from East LA"?
This is a playwright made by Josefina Lopez about being an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. She crossed the border with her three daughters to East LA after her husband cheated on her. When she came to America she had a small business selling elotes (corn). She occasionally gets stopped and arrested by the police for her business. At the end she talks to politicians about legalizing her business and about being an illegal immigrant.
What was "Patriot Acts"?
This is a true story about Pakistani immigrant Talat Hamdani and discrimination she faced with her family. Her eldest son Salman was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack. She was a middle school teacher.
What was "Glory Box"?
This playwright was written by Tim Miller talking about him being gay and immigrating to the US from Australia. This was at a time when gay marriage was not legal. He faced discrimination because he was gay. At the end of the play he immigrates to the US alone because his boyfriend could not get citizenship in the US.
How do you know when a source is credible?
Timeliness: need to be recent; check timestamp (5 years or less) Authority: Do they cite their credentials? Does the information come from an author or organization that has authority to speak on the topic? Relevance: Does this article relate to your topic? Perspective: Find sources that will help you understand the other side as well
What are the types of claims?
Types of claims: -Fact -Value (right or wrong) -Cause and Effect (something happened that made another thins happen) -Solution (problem and how to fix it)
Who were some of the main characters in When the Rainbow Goddess Wept and what did they do?
Yvonne- A nine-year-old girl living in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion of World War 2; she is the main character Nando-Yvonne's father and husband of Angeling; at the beginning of the book he is fond of the Americans but when he gets captured he grows hatred toward the Americans Lolo Peping-Grandfather of Yvonne and Esperanza; was killed when the Japanese bombed Ubec Angeling- Yvonne's mother and wife of Nando; carried a stillborn baby in the jungle; Lourdes- Sister of Angeling and mother of Esperanza; has an encounter with her ex-husband's lover Esperanza-cousin of Yvonne who is one year older; raised by a single mother who owns a catering business; was left behind in Ubec with her mother and Lolo Peping where she got seriously hurt Nida- wife of Max; had intercourse with a Japanese soldier to save Yvonne and Angeling; she got pregnant Laydan- maid of Yvonne and her family; she also acted as a friend of Yvonne; told Yvonne stories then asked Yvonne to keep telling them; dies in the middle of the book Doc Meñez- asked to be crucified then died and then came back to life; his whole family was murdered by the Japanese and it made him go crazy
What is code switching?
the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation (EX: In Confessions of Women From East LA she writes in some Spanish and English)
