Explain. Both of Eli's parents care about his future and they both care about it in different ways but it seems as though his mother cares more personally about his future. His mother is more concerned with what the school is like and how Eil will do there but his dad only cares about the floor plans and his business side of the Whitehill school.

What is actually happening when Terry's father's eyes "go away"

He sees what happened back in Vietnam. He is watching it over and over, the gun fire, mortars, and the darkness and sometimes he thinks he is in it again like in the hardware store.

What finally makes Terry ask his father about his experience in the war

He was being eaten up by the embarrassment and he wanted to understand what was going on with his father. He would cross to the opposite side of the street when he saw his dad coming and that's when he knew he had to do something.

8. How can parents who are not wealthy send their sons to Whitehill

If their child has promising abilities and they are accepted, they can go to the school whether or not if their parents can pay, the school will help them pay for the tuition and pay for his clothes and transportation.

In the beginning, they think that it is going to be a great day and that he will continue their legacy of the Remezals at Whitehill. But they do not know that he actually didn't get in and then the day just goes downhill from there.

Terry and his father have a seemingly normal relationship besides the things that Terry can't talk with his father about. They had a good relationship before but in a good relationship there are just certain things that you can't tell the other person. By telling his son what war was like, he opened up about his past and improved his relationship and grew the trust between them. Before he talked to him, they could talk about the normal stuff but now they can feel more comfortable talking about even more. The son's trust may grow and so will the fathers. Before the talk, they were able to talk about girls and hang around and drink sodas. Now they can do those same things but Terry won't have to worry about trying to avoid talking about Vietnam. His dad may also have less problems with his PTSD if he has someone that he trusts instead of a counselor like he didn't want to see, to talk to.

What is the basic situation?

Terry is bothered because he does not understand why his father acts strange.

Terry understands a little bit now but he understands that he will never fully understand and he accepts it. In addition, he will not be embarrassed when his dad does something weird and he will be more sympathetic.

What is the conflict?

Terry wants to know why his dad acts strange and how he got Vietnam Syndrome.

Why does Terry's father say he died that day in the war

Terry's father said that he died in that war because when he went into that war, a part of him did die. A part of him that others will never be able to understand. Part of him did things and saw things back in Vietnam that will forever be in his mind and those things scarred him.

The memory of when his dad embarrassed him in the mall when his dad was squirming around the floor on his stomach and making noises in the hardware store.

The theme is patience and courage. The theme is also war and how war can scar you for life. It took a lot of courage to ask his father why he acts so weird because he didn't want to hurt his feelings. He acts weird sometimes and his wander off because of the Vietnam Syn. from the War. It took a lot of patience for Terry to ask and understand.

Why does Terry's father crawl across the floor of the hardware store

There is something in the store that triggers his PTSD and so when he hears it, he thinks he is back in war. He is crawling on the ground like he was back in vietnam.

9. What did Tom Hilyer's son and the 30 African students do that Eli did not do

They all passed the entrance exam, however Eli did not.

Explain why Eli has not been accepted into Whitehill. How is the process of admission different from it used to be when Dr. Remenzel was a student?

To get into Whitehill Eli had to take an entrance exam however, Eli failed it and was not accepted in. The difference back then was that they had lots of forms and entrance exams. When Dr. Remenzal was there they just had an interview with the headmaster and then they usually just accept them.

4. How was he different from most students at Whitehill

Tom wasn't from a rich family so he is what they call a scholarship boy. So if he did well enough to get in the school would pretty much pay for his tution.

Turning point of "The Lie"

When Eli & parents met headmaster who says it's weird that you came to visit w/Eli because Eli was denied admission. The lie is revealed.

What is the subplot

When his dad tells him a story about when he was in war and he was hiding and how he could hear the mortars and he was the only one alive out of 54 men.

Explain what kind of place Whitehill is and why it is so important to the Remenzels' (both Dr. Remenzel and his wife) that Eli attends.

Whitehill is a very academic central school and is important to Dr. Remensel because it is his family's tradition and they have been going there for many years. They are even honoring his great-great-grandfather. Sylvia Eli's mom wants him to go there because it is one of the best schools and wants him to continue the legacy.
