Neither plate subducted. High pressures and mass of sediments, which have been deformed to form fold mountains, combine to force base of crust down. Partial melting at base of continental crust will produce silicic magma.

How is magma formed at a continental-continental plate margin?

Convection in mantle slowly transports heat from core to surface. Mantle plumes carry heat upwards in narrow, rising columns of hot material, which spreads out when plume head meets base of rigid lithosphere. Lower pressures allow decompression and partial melting of mantle peridotite, forming large volumes of basaltic magma.

How is magma produced at hot spots?

When oceanic plate subducted, water in its rocks is carried down into the hot mantle. As descending plate heats up, water released into mantle rocks above the plate. Water lowers melting point of minerals in mantle rock and partial melting of mantle produces magma. Known as flux melting.

Pressure increases with depth and rock then requires a higher temperature to melt.

If temperature decreases with depth, why is molten rock not found at little more than 40km?

Magma must rise through thicker silicic crust, may partially melt due to increasing temperature. Rising mafic magma may be 1000°C and silicic melts at just 800°C. Result is mixing of the mafic and silicic melts to give intermediate to silicic magma.

Erupting magma is mafic to intermediate in composition, as initially magma has only thin oceanic crust to rise through. If magma rises quickly at shallow depths will be basalt. If crust is thicker may be intermediate.
