Gantt Charts

What is it?

A visual representation of all tasks plotted against a timeline.

Role of a Gantt Chart

Used to allow managers to determine what the quickest time to complete a project is and ensuring that each task is completed on schedule. Visual representation of project gives managers instant overview of: the project, activities involved, when each activity must be completed and duration of each project.

Disadvantages

Can be complex. Can be time consuming. Needs to be constantly updated (things inevitably change as you commence a project). Size of bar doesn't indicate amount of work/tell what level of resources you need to complete an activity.

Advantages

Creates a visual image of complexity. Organises thoughts by dividing a big project into its component parts. Monitors progress. Helps set realistic time frames and puts things into perspective.
