Anomie

"normlessness" term used to desribe alienation and loss of purpose that result from weaker social bonds

Primary and Secondary groups

Primary: the people who are most important to sense of self Secondary: groups that are larger and less intimate than primary groups, organized around a specific goal

Rationalization , McDonaldization

Rationalization: the application of economic logic to human activity Mcdonaldization: george ritzer's term describing the spread of bureautic rationalization

Social network and social ties

network: ties connecting an individual to other people who may also effect the individual Ties: connections between individuals

Power

the ability to control the actions of others

Group

A set of individuals who interact with each other and share some elements of identity.

Groupthink

A situation in which group members seek unanimous agreement despite their individual doubts

Conformity

Adjusting our behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard

In-group vs out group

IN: a group that one identifies with and feels loyalty toward Out: groups forward in which an individuals feels opposition

Group cohesion

The sense of solidarity, or team spirit, that an individual feels toward their group is called

Bureaucracies

secondary group designed to perform tasks efficiently. Characterized by written rules

Authority (traditional,legal-rational,charismatic)

traditional: authority based in custom or birth right Legal-rational: authority based on laws and rules Charismatic: authority based in the perception of remarkable personal qualities in a leader
