Emancipation

Act or process of freeing enslaved people.

Gradualism

Belief that slavery should be ended gradually. First they would stop traders from bringing in slaves. Then they would stop slavery in the north and upper south before ending it in the lower south. Supporters believed it would give the south time to adjust their economy.

Colonization

Belief that the best solution to end slavery would be to send African Americans back to their homelands in Africa. Dec 1816 Anti Slavery Movement founded 'American Colonization Society' they acquired land in West Africa and began taking free African Americans to what would become nation of Liberia. But many African Americans viewed United States as their home and did not want to move

Why was abolitionism not a popular movement in the North or South?

It was not popular in the North because it was viewed as a threat to the existing social system and it was not popular in the South because most of the southerners society was based on agriculture which had slaves doing most of the work.

Many americans opposed slavery, and some of the nations founders knew that a nation based on liberty and equality for all would have difficulty remaining true to its ideals while continuing tho enslave humans

Slavery was vital to them because slaves were needed to work the land in the south. wrote newspapers supporting slavery which was believed to cause riots. Few people accepted the idea of abolition.
