Why America join WWI
President Wilson was an idealist, and believed if Germany won WW1 this would be a 'bad thing' not just for USA, but for the whole world. The best way to prevent this was for USA to join the war on the Allied side. unrestricted submarine warfare was sinking US merchant ships and killing US merchant seamen, even though USA was neutral. Further, ships from other neutral nations sailing to and from USA were also being sunk, and this was adversely effecting the US economy. The best way to stop this happening was to join the war on the Allied side. Germany sent the Zimmerman Telegram to the Mexican government, January 1917. This offered Mexico "substantial aid" in recovering territory lost during the Mexican-American war of 1846-48 if Mexico attacked USA. This showed that Germany had become a direct threat to US territory.

Land was held in trust by the US government for 25 yrs. US citizenship granted to NA's after 4 yrs. Over ⅔ of all Native land was lost. They also remain in effect until Indian Reorganization Act in 1934 Many NA rejected assimilation and "returned" to earlier spirituality. However, the purpose of the Dawes Severalty Act was also an attempt to integrate Native American Indians into white society by changing their nomadic lifestyle to the static, settled western lifestyle of farmers and settlers. 1887, dismantled American Indian tribes, set up individuals as family heads with 160 acres, tried to make rugged individualists out of the Indians, attempt to assimilate the Indian population into that of the American
