What was Florence like?
It was one of the largest cities (60,000-100,000 inhabitants) It was a center of rich trade (wool and cloth) Businessmen ruled, and it controlled farming land around. It was an impressive city with art and architecture.
What was unique about Italy's geography that helped the Renaissance start there?
Italy is surrounded by water on all 3 sides, it is a peninsula (Adriatic sea and the Mediterranean sea) so boats could go to any part of Italy. People could sell their own products to other countries easily, because trade was easier on water than land.
Why did the Renaissance start in Italy?
Italy was made up of many independent states, they were prosperous and a center for international trade. They employed rich bankers, merchants and lawyers that could afford to build fine houses, buy books and employ musicians and artists.

Scholars examined them, however many were lost and were of poor quality, so it kind of gave a reason for people to start discovering new things and think of new ideas/theories.
