8/16/2022: Nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia would kill more than 5 billion people - just from starvation, study finds

7/27/2022: Brain-eating parasite found in Iowa lake, 1 dead

Naegleria fowleri found at the Lake of Three Fires, in Iowa. Commonly occurs in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals. Can cause Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Only 31 cases of this amoeba have been reported. There is no test to check for it, the lake will reopen but swimmers will be warned that the parasite is there.

7/20/2022: CDC study reveals overdose death rates surged among minorities in 2020

Studies found that death rates increased 44% for black people, 39% for American Indians and Alaska Natives compared to 2019. Rose 22% for white people. Probably caused by the pandemic. Death rates for Natives and Alaskans between ages 25 to 44 doubled white women of the same age group. Only 10% of Natives, Alaskans and Hispanic people received substance use treatment.

7/19/2022: How COVID-19 symptoms are changing: A sore throat and hoarse voice became top symptoms with newer variant

Symptoms also lasted for a shorter period of days. Less than 20% of cases had symptoms and after the first day, they began. Tested both Delta and Omicron variants. Delta affects lung cells more than Omicron. Omicron transmits more easily and impacts less organs and has less symptoms.

Type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria that grows in warm water. First named at American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Outbreaks often associated with buildings or structures with complicated water systems. Is not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms include muscle aches, fever and chills. Lasts 2 to 5 days and ranges from mild cough to rapidly fatal.

8/4/2022: Bat infestation forces Nevada fire station to close indefinitely

It is a risk to the fire crews. They have been flying in the living quarters and dead bats have been found in the apparatus bay. Will relocate an ambulence and two of its fire personnel to a nearby station as the fire district consults with experts on how to eliminate the bat colonies. Bats may be carrying rabies and other viruses. They had another issue in 2015 with bats.

8/4/2022: Lyme disease isn't the only virus spread by tick bites. Beware Powassan virus.

Jonny Simoson is a 3 year old boy recovering from the severe infection caused by the Powassan virus. His mother spotted a tick a couple of weeks before Jonny got sick with a headache and high fever, she took him to the ER. He was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis, this virus causes both. Care includes fluids, oxygen and seizure meds. Doctors tried IVIG therapy, an infusion of filtered antibodies from blood donors. He went home after two weeks and received rehabilitation speech, occupational and physical therapy. He has left side weakness. His speech regressed a little. Family is raising awarness about the illness. Best way to prevent is insect repellants. Tick mostly found in Northeast.

8/10/2022: Experimental immunotherapy treatment changes lives for cancer patients in small trial

Kelly Spill had a rare type of colon cancer, 5 to 10% with her early type of cancer that allows for her onw immune cells to attack the cancer. She was cured of her cancer. Others who underwent similar therapies were cured completely.

7/22/2022: U.S. confirms first two cases of monkeypox in children — one case is in California

Likely the cause of household transmission. One is a toddler in Cali and the other is an infant traveling through D.C. area. Children under 8 are among those increased risk for severe monkeypox disease. 8 cases in cis women, most have gay men. Symptoms take a little over a week to develop, following exposure. During incubation period, CDC recommends taking two dose vaccine to reduce severity and prevent it from happening.

7/17/2022: Studying the effects of long COVID

Long COVID is a major issue: it means fatigue, dizziness, inability to regulate body temperature, and difficulty concentrating. Scientific community has yet to define the term Long COVID with a proper meaning. The more severe and prolonged exposure with COVID, increased chances of long COVID. Being vaccinated lowers risk. Possible causes of long COVID include long term damage, disruption of the microbiome, systemic issues with inflammation, and reaction to remnants of COVID infection.

8/4/2022: U.S. declares monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency

Now counts more infections from the virus than any other country in the world. Could help clear the way for resources to scale up vaccinations. Administration distributed another 266k doses of Jynneos monkeypox vaccine, another 150k have initially slated for delivery from vaccine maker Bavarian Nordic.

One fire related to the unicycles resulted in smoke inhalation that caused injuries to two people and property damage to a commercial building. Battery pack overheats and catches on fire. Sold for $1200 and $1350 online.

7/23/2022: Monkeypox officially becomes a global emergency

Outbreak in more than 70 countries. Established in Europe, North America and elsewhere. Did not amount to a national emergency yet. Reported in 74 countries since May. Deaths only in Africa. Spreads by rodents in limited outbreaks in Africa. 99% of cases in Africa were men and 98% involved gay men. No transmission beyond men that are gay or bi. Some U.S. experts have speculated whether monkeypox may on the verge of becoming an STD.

Researchers gave back special corneal implant made from medical grade collagen from porcine skin, purified byproduct of food industry. Given to those that have diseased corneas, outermost and transparent layer of the eye for glaucoma. 12.7 million people are waiting lists for cornea transplants. Most fixes require a human donation. Newly bioengnieered corneas were given to 14 people in Iran and India and 6 who were almost going to lose their sign. Doctors implant into the existing cornea, needs no stiches and it is minimally invasive with laser or by hand. Tissue healed fast, 8 week treatment with eye drops to prevent rejection. Patients were followed for two years and no complications. Must do a larger clinical trial.

Rise in COVID cases caused the park to require masks in people 2+. 4 of 10 most visited national parks have indoor mask requirements. Average of 16 cases a day, 70 per 100,000 infection rate. Near Yosemite, 53.8 of 100,000 people. Celebrating 150th anniversary this year.

Roqaia Reda turns two in 13 days. She was diagnosed with SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). In severe cases, infants die before the age of 2. Roundup has glyphosphate. Can also be found in hummus, chickpeas, baby formula, and organic beer and wine. The company said they would replace it starting in 2023. It does not cause harm to humans but more testing is being conducted by the CDC.

Sabizabulin can decrease risk of death in COVID patients who are at risk for severe disease. 45% who got the placebo died. 20% who got it passed away. Study on 130 people. Benefits seem to be better than smaller mortality reductions in other treatments like dexamethasone or remdesivir. 9 mg pill once a day for up to 21 days. First created to treat prostate and breast cancer. Can distupt spread of COVID and tame the immune response it triggers.

Sad story, causes mother of two with special needs to leave abusive husband and then discover she has an ectopic pregnancy. Her life was saved by an abortion. Ectopic means it got stuck in fallopian tube instead of coming down to uterus. Not having an abortion can cause severe loss of blood. Lady from Johns Hopkins told CDC about her experience with HELLP syndrome. It can cause preeclampsia, causing the liver to fail, platlet numbers to decrease, and spontaneous hemorrhaging. Can be life threatening. Issues withterm-58 pregnancies put the mother and child at risk. Systemic issues may prevent people from gettin the care they need. In 2020, maternal mortality rate of 23.8%, lack women was 55.3% average. Mental health issues can arise due to carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term. Those who are denied abortions are likely to see an increase in poverty and debt. Additional problems with health and safety and staying in contact with abusive partners. Addante added that the ban on abortion betrayed her oath as a doctor.

The case involves two male partners whose dog showed symptoms, developed lesions and tested positive for the monkeypox virus. The man slept with the dog. Countries where it is endemic, rodents and primates can carry the virus. Findings denote the need to isolate pets from monkeypox positive individuals.

7/22/2022: CVS wants to know if certain drugs will be used for abortions

The meds in questions, methotrexate and misoprostol can treat other conditions (cancers, rheumatoid arthritis and severe stomach ulcer respectively). CVS Health will still fill prescriptions for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.

8/16/2022: Ezra Miller says they are seeking treatment for "complex mental health issues"

They were charged with felon burglary in Vermont. Last week, he allegedly took several bottles of alcohol from a house when there was no one home. Also, he was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment because be grabbed a woman singing at a karaoke bar and attacked a man playing darts. Parents of an 18 yeaar old accused him of grooming a minor that was aged 12.

7/27/2022: CDC warns of deadly bacteria found in Mississippi soil after two residents sickened

They were sickened by meliodosis, also known as Whitmore's disease, rare bacteria known as Bukholderia pseudomallei. Found in Puerto Rico, also found in of the US State. Symptoms start a week after exposure. NIcknamed great mimicker of diseases. Fever, swelling, cough, joint pain, seizures. Any organ can be infected by the bacteria, including the brain. Only a fraction of exposures result in the disease, 1 in 4600. 12 cases in people who have traveled abroad. Those at higher risk should avoid mud or heavy rains and wear gloves and boots. Dangerous to those with diabetes, excessive alcohol use, chronic kidney disease or immunosupressive conditions.

8/15/2022: Scotland begins providing free period products, becoming the first country in the world to do so

Title and even educational facilities. People can find the products via PickUpMyPeriod, more than 1000 locations available on the app. Survey by Young Scot Enterprise conducted a survey that found 24% struggled to find the appropriate products ad 61% could not afford them. Not managing menstruation can lead to a greater risk of infection, such as not changing a tampon.

Donated 8.9 million doses, 4.8 from main supply and 4.1 from COVAX sharing program. 85% of Canadians are vaccinated. 61% of world's population is and 16% in poorest countries.

Title. From Big Olaf in Sarasota. Should clean areas, containers and serving utensils that touched the ice cream. Big Olaf stopped selling products until further notice. 5 of the 23 were pregnant, 1 lost her fetus. Listeria is most dangerous to pregnant women, those over 65, immunocompromised. Symptoms can start 2 weeks-70 dats after. Diarrhea, fever can recover without treatment.

7/11/2022: Missouri swimmer infected with rare brain-eating amoeba, likely from lake in Iowa

Title. Lake has been shut down. Naegleria fowleri amoeba caused it. Testing is ongoing. 97% fatality rate, only 4 of 154 known infected have survived. SYmptoms include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting. People with 1 to 18 days within onset of symptoms.

Title. She eventually got her prescription. District Judge cannot raise issues about freedom of religion. Women have been stocking up on contraceptives.

Two ruptured aneursyms, quite a bit of her brain no longer functions. She had a severe headache, one ruptured in 2011 and another in 2013. She says her taste in men was affected.

Unwind social distancing measures which has been phased out. Less than half of school have been vaccinated. Those not fully vaccinated would no longer need to quarantine instead of masking for 10 days and testing 5 days after exposure.

Usually require a prescription that can raise the risk of rare but dangerous blood clots. FDA approval would apply to the HRA pill. Advocates have been working for nearly 2 decades to make contraceptives more accessible. Free the Pill campaign. Contains a single synthetic hormone, progestin that blocks sperm in the cervix. 8/9/2022: Pfizer, French firm starting testing of major Lyme disease vaccine

Valneva and Pfizer are aiming to avoid previous pitfalls and develop a vaccine against adults and kids from 2 most common strains. Dangerous to not have any protection. Often, the first sign is a round, bull-eye's rash. The vaccine targets a protein present in the tick's gut. It takes 36 hours before bacteria spreads to victim. Gives it time for antibodies the tick digests from a vaccinated person's blood to attack germs at source. Different from GlxoSmithKline vaccine that was pulled of market in 2022 due to controversey and low sales.
