8/12/2022: Idaho Supreme Court rules that abortion restrictions can take effect amid legal challenges
August 25th will near total criminalize all abortions. Potentional relatives of the employers can sue abortion providers for up to 20000, Rapists cannot sue but their families can. Abortion ban exceptions are being viewed as too vague.
7/26/2022: U.S. spots first monkeypox case in a pregnant woman as cases climb
Baby and mother are both fine, baby was delivered safely. Newborn was given an infusion of immune globulin, which was used by the FDA to deploy during monkeypox outbreaks, given prophylactically. Monkeypox usually has negative effects on pregnant mothers and their babies. The drug tecovirimat can be used to treat pregnant patients and had no worrying side effects. The Jynneos vaccine has been tested in pregnant animals and did not raise any concerns.
8/2/2022: Oatly, Stumptown and other beverages recalled due to potential microbial contamination
Contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii, according to the FDA. Can cause sepsis or meningitis. Did not meet commercial sterility specifications.
7/7/2022: Massachusetts AG warns consumers about crisis pregnancy centers posing as abortion clinics
Crisis Pregnancy centers, primary purpose to dissuade women from having abortions. Are not licensed medical facilities, not staffed by doctors or nurses. Do not follow codes of ethics or uphols patient privacy laws. Can share info with anti-abortion partners. Can criminalize those seeking to end a pregnancy. Can mislead women about how far along they are or medical fas about having an abortion. Claim to be able to reverse medication abortion. Free tests, abortion counseling, screenings or education. All false. 30 centers in MA and 2500 across the US. Outnumber abortion clinics 3 to 1. Repitive asf.

8/16/2022: Nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia would kill more than 5 billion people - just from starvation, study finds
It would cause worldwide famine because soot wouldblock the sunlight. Bad food security. Even a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan would be devastating. International trade would halt because temperature would drop and the famine would kill at least 225 mil people. US and Russia would kill 360 mil poeple and 5 billion from starvation. Density of soot would reduce temp to 58 degrees. When 150 Tg of soot is unleashed, the global average calorie would decline by about 90% in 3 to 4 years after nuclear war. CBS News found that 70% of adults are worried that Russia's invasion of Ukraine could trigger conflict. US and Russia currently have more than 1500 nuclear weapons deployed and ready to fire.
8/15/2022: Shelter Sickness: Migrants see health problems linger and worsen while waiting at the border
Kids in a converted gym had stomach issues after being served a meal of sausage and beans. Someone's son developed fever and diarrhea and was throwing up. Her son is still malnourished and his condition has not improved. Increase in people seeking asylum and refugees, through the COVID pandemic, Mexican border towns have become holding areas for people waiting policies to change. Other children have developed health issues, such as hypertension or diabetes, some left without care. Shelters have experienced outbreaks of chickenpox and measles since 2019. 70% of callers do Las Americas need attention and require immediate cancer treatment. Title 42 has done more to harm public health than good. Nonprofits attempt to seek help and aid for these people.

Knocked out vision, hearing and equilibrium. Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels, causing cell walls to thicken and reduce passageway in a vessel. If blood flow is restricted, it can caust organ and tissue damage.

8/15/2022: Abortion bans restrict medications women need for chronic conditions
Methotrexate, often used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and cancer. It can also terminate nonviable pregnancies. Patients are angry about their next refill.

More than 70% of Americans have been infected, millions thin kthey have never had COVID and had it but they did not get tested and had no symptoms. NY State healh officials have found indications of additional cases of polio in two different countries. First case in almost a decade. Orange and Rockland county in July. We do not know how many are infected. Unvaccinated NYers are urged to get vaccinated. Vaccine is 99% effective in children wo get the full 4 dose regimen.
7/27/2022: Brain-eating parasite found in Iowa lake, 1 dead
Naegleria fowleri found at the Lake of Three Fires, in Iowa. Commonly occurs in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals. Can cause Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Only 31 cases of this amoeba have been reported. There is no test to check for it, the lake will reopen but swimmers will be warned that the parasite is there.
7/20/2022: CDC study reveals overdose death rates surged among minorities in 2020
Studies found that death rates increased 44% for black people, 39% for American Indians and Alaska Natives compared to 2019. Rose 22% for white people. Probably caused by the pandemic. Death rates for Natives and Alaskans between ages 25 to 44 doubled white women of the same age group. Only 10% of Natives, Alaskans and Hispanic people received substance use treatment.
7/19/2022: How COVID-19 symptoms are changing: A sore throat and hoarse voice became top symptoms with newer variant
Symptoms also lasted for a shorter period of days. Less than 20% of cases had symptoms and after the first day, they began. Tested both Delta and Omicron variants. Delta affects lung cells more than Omicron. Omicron transmits more easily and impacts less organs and has less symptoms.

Woodbridge, the Illinois-based company notified that metal was found in the pizza. No confirmed adverse reactions to recalled pizzas.

15 people sickened across 11 states. Selling of small turtles caused this. They can get it by touching a turtle or something in its environment and then touch their mouth or handle food without washing their hands first. Symptoms include a fever 102+, diarrhea and excessive vomiting.
7/30/2022: New York City declares monkeypox a public health emergency
150k New Yorkers may currently be at risk for monkeypox exposure. NYC accounts for just under 25% of all cases in the U.S. State was slated to receive another 110000 monkeypox vaccine doses, 80k will go to NYC, reminaing 30k go to the rest of the state.
8/8/2022: "Terrifying" study links risk of over 200 infectious diseases to climate hazards like flooding, heat waves and drought
218/357 human infectious diseases, 58% made worse by climate change. Climate changes risk of disease. 286 unique sicknesses and 223 were worsened by climate hazards, 54 had cases of both aggravated and minimized. Correlation is not causation. Risk between infectious disease and the risk of famine, extreme weather disasters and conflict over reousrces. More than 500k people have died in natural disasters in the last 20 years.
7/22/2022: Family Dollar recalls more than 400 products that were improperly stored
430 products such as toothpaste, OTC drugs, hemorrhoid ointment stored at wrong temp. Earlier this year, 1000 dead rodents were found at a distribution facility, causing the close of more than 400 stores.
7/19/2022: CDC recommends Novavax COVID vaccine after unanimous vote
4th option for unvaccinated adults. Recombinant protein vaccine. 16% of unvaccinated said they would get probably or defintely get the protein-based vaccine. 3.2 million doses available. Archie Battersbee was found unconscious in his home due to taking part in an online challenge that was ongoing. His brain stem and him are dead. Royal London Hospital is trying to take him off the ventilator but parents don't want to end life support and are fighting it in the courts.

Company or insurer can provide reimbursement. Known as a generous benefit, without trumpeting it. Pay for claims and then a third party processes the claims. Microsoft joins the list. Declared a public health emergency, vaccine is overwhelming supply and cases double by the weeks in some states. No one has died but outbreak is serious. Cases have surpassed 7100 with 6 states reporting more than 500 confirmed cases. Vast majority of cases have been found, also transmitted through skin to skin contact. Found in a water sample taken from a cooling tower in Embassy Suites Napa Valley, none of those who were sickened had visisted or stated at the hotel. Type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria that grows in warm water. First named at American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Outbreaks often associated with buildings or structures with complicated water systems. Is not contagious and can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms include muscle aches, fever and chills. Lasts 2 to 5 days and ranges from mild cough to rapidly fatal.

Four companies supply about 90% of domestic baby formula in the US. Started with Abbott closed its largest plant due to contamination.

Can cause stomach pain, myalgia, diarrhea, weight loss or hematuria or oliguria. Can ve harmful to children, especially those younger than 6. Exposure can come during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Originated in Lithuania.
8/4/2022: Bat infestation forces Nevada fire station to close indefinitely
It is a risk to the fire crews. They have been flying in the living quarters and dead bats have been found in the apparatus bay. Will relocate an ambulence and two of its fire personnel to a nearby station as the fire district consults with experts on how to eliminate the bat colonies. Bats may be carrying rabies and other viruses. They had another issue in 2015 with bats.
8/4/2022: Lyme disease isn't the only virus spread by tick bites. Beware Powassan virus.
Jonny Simoson is a 3 year old boy recovering from the severe infection caused by the Powassan virus. His mother spotted a tick a couple of weeks before Jonny got sick with a headache and high fever, she took him to the ER. He was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis, this virus causes both. Care includes fluids, oxygen and seizure meds. Doctors tried IVIG therapy, an infusion of filtered antibodies from blood donors. He went home after two weeks and received rehabilitation speech, occupational and physical therapy. He has left side weakness. His speech regressed a little. Family is raising awarness about the illness. Best way to prevent is insect repellants. Tick mostly found in Northeast.
8/10/2022: Experimental immunotherapy treatment changes lives for cancer patients in small trial
Kelly Spill had a rare type of colon cancer, 5 to 10% with her early type of cancer that allows for her onw immune cells to attack the cancer. She was cured of her cancer. Others who underwent similar therapies were cured completely.
7/22/2022: U.S. confirms first two cases of monkeypox in children — one case is in California
Likely the cause of household transmission. One is a toddler in Cali and the other is an infant traveling through D.C. area. Children under 8 are among those increased risk for severe monkeypox disease. 8 cases in cis women, most have gay men. Symptoms take a little over a week to develop, following exposure. During incubation period, CDC recommends taking two dose vaccine to reduce severity and prevent it from happening.
7/17/2022: Studying the effects of long COVID
Long COVID is a major issue: it means fatigue, dizziness, inability to regulate body temperature, and difficulty concentrating. Scientific community has yet to define the term Long COVID with a proper meaning. The more severe and prolonged exposure with COVID, increased chances of long COVID. Being vaccinated lowers risk. Possible causes of long COVID include long term damage, disruption of the microbiome, systemic issues with inflammation, and reaction to remnants of COVID infection.
8/4/2022: U.S. declares monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency
Now counts more infections from the virus than any other country in the world. Could help clear the way for resources to scale up vaccinations. Administration distributed another 266k doses of Jynneos monkeypox vaccine, another 150k have initially slated for delivery from vaccine maker Bavarian Nordic.
8/10/2022: Polio booster vaccine to be offered to children in London after more virus found in sewage water
Offered to those aged 1 to 9. None with paralysis thus far, only 1 in 200 cases. Agency working with US and Israel to determine links between polio in those two countries. In rare cases, the live viruses in the polio vaccine can mutate and cause an outbreak. ALso found in NY, Rockland county and Orange county.

One dead, 22 hospitalized. Dangerous to those pregnant, over 65 or immunocompromised. Most recover without treatment. Five pregnant people, 1 lost a fetus.
7/13/2022: King Song electric unicycles are a fire risk, government warns
One fire related to the unicycles resulted in smoke inhalation that caused injuries to two people and property damage to a commercial building. Battery pack overheats and catches on fire. Sold for $1200 and $1350 online.
7/23/2022: Monkeypox officially becomes a global emergency
Outbreak in more than 70 countries. Established in Europe, North America and elsewhere. Did not amount to a national emergency yet. Reported in 74 countries since May. Deaths only in Africa. Spreads by rodents in limited outbreaks in Africa. 99% of cases in Africa were men and 98% involved gay men. No transmission beyond men that are gay or bi. Some U.S. experts have speculated whether monkeypox may on the verge of becoming an STD.

People can get infected and spread the virus as long as 30 days after becoming infected. CDC recommends asking parents or caregivers, locating old childhood documents or asking schools, doctors or employers to see if ghey kept your record. CDC recommends 4 doses, healthcare workers who may be exposed to the virus may want to consider additional vaccination.

Previously unvaccinated young adult. Had a vaccine derived strain of the virus. US Children are routinely vaccinated against polio. It spreads by contaminated water. It can infect a person's spinal cord, causing paralysis and permanent disability/death/
7/19/2022: Fighting monkeypox, sexual health clinics are underfunded and ill-equipped
Primarily spread via homosexual men. People who present with blisters or pimples on the genitals seek care for herpes, syphlis or other STIs. 10% of people with the disease require hospital care. People with monkeyfox risk permanent scarring, excruciating pain, making it difficult to swalow, urinate or have bowel movements. Funding from the CDC to prevent STIs has fallen 10% in the last 20 years. Cases have quadrupled in said time. Sysytem is highly inadequate and in need of an update. Vaccines are most effective after close contact with a monkeypox patient after 4 days.

Red alert for child health. Largest sustained drop in childhood immunization in a generation. Most of children who missed out are in developing countries. Worst seen in East Asia and the Pacific. Could cause outbreaks in polio and measles. Since the suspension of polio vaccines with the start of COVID, at least 30 polio epidemics in the world.

8/12/2022: Pig skin protein gives sight back to 14 blind people - including three with perfect vision
Researchers gave back special corneal implant made from medical grade collagen from porcine skin, purified byproduct of food industry. Given to those that have diseased corneas, outermost and transparent layer of the eye for glaucoma. 12.7 million people are waiting lists for cornea transplants. Most fixes require a human donation. Newly bioengnieered corneas were given to 14 people in Iran and India and 6 who were almost going to lose their sign. Doctors implant into the existing cornea, needs no stiches and it is minimally invasive with laser or by hand. Tissue healed fast, 8 week treatment with eye drops to prevent rejection. Patients were followed for two years and no complications. Must do a larger clinical trial.

Rise in COVID cases caused the park to require masks in people 2+. 4 of 10 most visited national parks have indoor mask requirements. Average of 16 cases a day, 70 per 100,000 infection rate. Near Yosemite, 53.8 of 100,000 people. Celebrating 150th anniversary this year.
7/1/2022: "The Power of Social Media": More than $2M crowdfunded for medicine to save a little girl's life
Roqaia Reda turns two in 13 days. She was diagnosed with SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). In severe cases, infants die before the age of 2. 7/12/2022: Weed-killing chemical found in majority of U.S. urine samples
Roundup has glyphosphate. Can also be found in hummus, chickpeas, baby formula, and organic beer and wine. The company said they would replace it starting in 2023. It does not cause harm to humans but more testing is being conducted by the CDC.

Sabizabulin can decrease risk of death in COVID patients who are at risk for severe disease. 45% who got the placebo died. 20% who got it passed away. Study on 130 people. Benefits seem to be better than smaller mortality reductions in other treatments like dexamethasone or remdesivir. 9 mg pill once a day for up to 21 days. First created to treat prostate and breast cancer. Can distupt spread of COVID and tame the immune response it triggers.
7/1/2022: "People will die": OB-GYNs explain how ectopic pregnancy and other complications threaten lives without abortion care
Sad story, causes mother of two with special needs to leave abusive husband and then discover she has an ectopic pregnancy. Her life was saved by an abortion. Ectopic means it got stuck in fallopian tube instead of coming down to uterus. Not having an abortion can cause severe loss of blood. Lady from Johns Hopkins told CDC about her experience with HELLP syndrome. It can cause preeclampsia, causing the liver to fail, platlet numbers to decrease, and spontaneous hemorrhaging. Can be life threatening. Issues withterm-58 pregnancies put the mother and child at risk. Systemic issues may prevent people from gettin the care they need. In 2020, maternal mortality rate of 23.8%, lack women was 55.3% average. Mental health issues can arise due to carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term. Those who are denied abortions are likely to see an increase in poverty and debt. Additional problems with health and safety and staying in contact with abusive partners. Addante added that the ban on abortion betrayed her oath as a doctor.

Spread via contact with lesions or bodily fluids, spreading in US and Europe. The case involves two male partners whose dog showed symptoms, developed lesions and tested positive for the monkeypox virus. The man slept with the dog. Countries where it is endemic, rodents and primates can carry the virus. Findings denote the need to isolate pets from monkeypox positive individuals.

Suffers from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Smaller repetitive hits to the heat and concussions may cause it. No cure and can only be diagnosed after death. Symptoms such as memory issues, problems organizing and planning simple activities, changes in behavior such as lack of motivation or having a short temper. Average age is 36, 18-76 in years of age. Demand greater than availability of avaccine. New formula will be delivered to country's stockpile soon. Process for authorization accelerated as the outbreak grew. Hopes to have nearly 7 million doses by mid 2023 of the Jynneos vaccine.
7/22/2022: CVS wants to know if certain drugs will be used for abortions
The meds in questions, methotrexate and misoprostol can treat other conditions (cancers, rheumatoid arthritis and severe stomach ulcer respectively). CVS Health will still fill prescriptions for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.

They hope to score a one-two punch. Protect abortion in California after Roe v. Wade and get aherad of what they see as the next front in reporductive rights fight. They were charged with felon burglary in Vermont. Last week, he allegedly took several bottles of alcohol from a house when there was no one home. Also, he was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment because be grabbed a woman singing at a karaoke bar and attacked a man playing darts. Parents of an 18 yeaar old accused him of grooming a minor that was aged 12.
7/27/2022: CDC warns of deadly bacteria found in Mississippi soil after two residents sickened
They were sickened by meliodosis, also known as Whitmore's disease, rare bacteria known as Bukholderia pseudomallei. Found in Puerto Rico, also found in of the US State. Symptoms start a week after exposure. NIcknamed great mimicker of diseases. Fever, swelling, cough, joint pain, seizures. Any organ can be infected by the bacteria, including the brain. Only a fraction of exposures result in the disease, 1 in 4600. 12 cases in people who have traveled abroad. Those at higher risk should avoid mud or heavy rains and wear gloves and boots. Dangerous to those with diabetes, excessive alcohol use, chronic kidney disease or immunosupressive conditions.

People can find the products via PickUpMyPeriod, more than 1000 locations available on the app. Survey by Young Scot Enterprise conducted a survey that found 24% struggled to find the appropriate products ad 61% could not afford them. Following issues with rare but fatal blood clots, Canada started using Pfizer and Moderna. 13.6 million doses have expired. Issues with limited demand and challenges with distribution and absorption. Donated 8.9 million doses, 4.8 from main supply and 4.1 from COVAX sharing program. 85% of Canadians are vaccinated. 61% of world's population is and 16% in poorest countries.

Big Olaf stopped selling products until further notice. 5 of the 23 were pregnant, 1 lost her fetus. Listeria is most dangerous to pregnant women, those over 65, immunocompromised. Symptoms can start 2 weeks-70 dats after. Diarrhea, fever can recover without treatment.
7/11/2022: Missouri swimmer infected with rare brain-eating amoeba, likely from lake in Iowa
Title. Lake has been shut down. Naegleria fowleri amoeba caused it. Testing is ongoing. 97% fatality rate, only 4 of 154 known infected have survived. SYmptoms include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting. People with 1 to 18 days within onset of symptoms.

8/9/2022: Pfizer, French firm starting testing of major Lyme disease vaccine
Valneva and Pfizer are aiming to avoid previous pitfalls and develop a vaccine against adults and kids from 2 most common strains. Dangerous to not have any protection. Often, the first sign is a round, bull-eye's rash. The vaccine targets a protein present in the tick's gut. It takes 36 hours before bacteria spreads to victim. Gives it time for antibodies the tick digests from a vaccinated person's blood to attack germs at source. Different from GlxoSmithKline vaccine that was pulled of market in 2022 due to controversey and low sales.
