-Africans were forced to pay taxes leading to a shift towards a money economy -European manufactured products also replaced traditional industries in many areas -Schools and hospitals were built in Africa (but mostly for Europeans)

It was a treaty that was signed by China after the Opium wars. It required China to pay for the war damage, it gave Britain 4 more trading post, British citizens were given extra territorial rights, and they did not have to obey Chinese laws
