comes from more complex thinking. these appear after primary emotions have been thought about.
How is language symbolic?
connections between words and ideas is arbitrary. letters/words don't actually look like the things they are referring to.
facilitative emotion
emotions which contribute to effective functioning. (Ex. a little nervousness may help you perform better)
debilitative emotion
emotions which detract from normal functioning. (Ex. staying angry about an argument that happened months ago)

what is negotiation in relation to perception?
it is sense making of a situation. if two narratives clash you may negotiate until you reach common ground. influence their perception.
what 4 elements make up emotions?
physiological reactions, nonverbal reactions, cognitive interpretations, verbal expression
What is divergence?
speaking in a way that emphasizes the differences of your speech from other's
static evaluations
statements with mistaken assumptions about people (Ex. He is always nice)

What is emotional contagion?
the tendency to mimc the emotional experiences and expressions of others
interpretation
the way we see things. may be different based on personal experience, knowledge, attitude.

tries to sugar coat bad news
true or false: shared narratives don't need to be accurate to work

relative language
words that gain their meaning by comparison (Ex. fast/slow, smart/dumb)
negotiation
you may influence another person's perception. you negotiate to reach a common ground when personal narratives clash.
selection
you pick what you pay attention to. May be bc the stimuli is intense, repetitious, or changing.
primary emotion
your initial reaction. the emotions you feel first as a response to a situation.
