Self-Concept internal motivation

people are motivated by personal standards that help them achieve and maintain a personal identity. We are who we strive to be.

Self-Concept external motivation

people are motivated by the social status they will achieve through their behaviours.

Goal internalization motivation

people are motivated to adopt behaviours that are congruent with their personal values, people at this level are somewhat selfless. They are working for a "cause"

Rules for Rules

Rules should have reasons, design rules in conjunction with participants, state rules in positive terms, keep rules clear, design rules to be equitable (reasonable), use rules to define responsible behaviours

SMART

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Trackable

Types of Facilitation

Use open-ended questions, Frontload the experience, use probing questions, use reflective questions

Unobtrusive Techniques

Utilize redirection (do you want to be my helper? Do you want to go and play connect four? Redirect them in a smooth transition),

Discernable techniques

behaviour contract: outline expectations of both the participant and the leader

Logical:

connected to action through logic ( if he didn't put away his equipment away when he was asked to he now has to put not only his equipment away but also the equipment of the other players)

Instrumental motivation

people are motivated by external tangible rewards such as trophies or prize money. This activity may be enjoyable

Discernable techniques

modeling: demonstrate desired behaviours

Natural

natural outcome of action ( if the equipment wasn't put away when asked it will now take longer for them to do it and they will be late for their next activity)

Arbitrary:

nothing to do with the behavior

Unobtrusive Techniques

offer appropriate challenges (FLOW: eliminate boredom or anxiety)

Intrinsic process motivation

the activity is the motivation, people are motivated to engage in the activity for the sheer fun of it.
