McClelland's Trichotomy of Motivation
Achievement, Power and Affliation
Consequences
Arbitrary, Logical, Natural
5 Sources of Motivation
Intrinsic process motivation, Instrumental motivation, Self-Concept external motivation, Self-Concept internal motivation,Goal internalization motivation
The Circle of Motivation
New need or drive - Expression of need (verbal) - Expression of need (behavioural) - Meet the need)
Can the Environment Motivate?
Physical: Colours, Posters, Noise, Temperature, Lighting Socioemotional: manage group size, meet need to belong, meaningful objectives
Rules for Rules
Rules should have reasons, design rules in conjunction with participants, state rules in positive terms, keep rules clear, design rules to be equitable (reasonable), use rules to define responsible behaviours
SMART
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Trackable
Types of Facilitation
Use open-ended questions, Frontload the experience, use probing questions, use reflective questions
Unobtrusive Techniques
Utilize redirection (do you want to be my helper? Do you want to go and play connect four? Redirect them in a smooth transition),
Discernable techniques
behaviour contract: outline expectations of both the participant and the leader
Logical:
connected to action through logic ( if he didn't put away his equipment away when he was asked to he now has to put not only his equipment away but also the equipment of the other players)
Instrumental motivation
people are motivated by external tangible rewards such as trophies or prize money. This activity may be enjoyable
Discernable techniques
modeling: demonstrate desired behaviours
Natural
natural outcome of action ( if the equipment wasn't put away when asked it will now take longer for them to do it and they will be late for their next activity)
Arbitrary:
nothing to do with the behavior
Unobtrusive Techniques
offer appropriate challenges (FLOW: eliminate boredom or anxiety)
Intrinsic process motivation
the activity is the motivation, people are motivated to engage in the activity for the sheer fun of it.
