Lecture 12. Autonomic Nervous System
sympathetic system colloquially referred to as
"fight or flight"
parasympathetic system called
"rest and digest" or "feed and breed"
What is only innervated by sympathetic division?
-arterioles -adrenal medulla -sweat glands -arrector pili
what does the ANS act on?
-blood vessels, glands, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle -generally speaking, organs are innervated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions -in a normal animal, these two divisions are in balance
What is only innervated by parasympathetic division?
-ciliary m. -lacrimal gland
autonomic nervous system (ANS)
-not under voluntary control -instead it is regulated by the hypothalamus and reticular formation, which both have connections to autonomic nuclei in the brainstem and spinal cord
ANS subdivisions?
-sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
What type nervous system is the ANS?
visceral efferent (viscera motor, GVE)
