mutual funds calculate their net asset value on a daily basis. lets say this mutual fund here as 4 investments. the value of these holdings is a total portfolio value of 210 millio ndollars. these shares get updated every day at the market close. so we have a new portfolio value ever day. the fund also has some liabilities and expenses that it incurrs to operate. expenses like paying for the management, the employees, trading commissions, etc. think about: what is the net asset value of this prtfolio/mutual fund? the stocks in the wrapper are worth 210 million dollars, the expenses that te fund incurred are 10 million dollars, that means that the net asset value is 200 million dollars. if this fund has 20 million shares, we can calcualte what the economic ownership is worth for one of those shares.
