Rescue Tube
(Both a reaching and throwing assist) A soft buoyant tube that can be best used for a person that is within three feet from the edge of the pool
Arm to arm
(Reaching assist) Only used if the victim is near the side of the pool. The rescuer lays down and reaches their hand to grab the victims forearm.

Drowning
Are you facedown or face up in streamline glide?
Face down
Elementary Backstroke
Face is out of water with ears under (on back) with whip kick. Arm movements can be described as monkey, airplane, soldier or up, out, together with a glide phase in the middle. Used for leisure and survival swim
Where do most drownings happen?
Fresh water settings (lakes, rivers, oceans)
Why is survival floating good for when you can not reach a side?
It conserves energy
Where should a student go for a fire alarm in the pool?
Line up on the East wall outside of the pool
Passive drowning victim
Not moving and will be floating facedown on the bottom or near the surface. This could be a result of becoming unconsious due to a seizure, spinal injury, or other health related incidents.
Success in swimming is dependent on which 2 factors?
Relaxation and body possition
Backstroke
Stroke in which head is aligned with the spine, performed on your back with face out of water but ears under, and arms move continuously in constant opposition to each other (one arm recovers while the other pulls). Used with the flutter kick and as a competitive stroke.
Which rescue equiptment is used when the victim is beyond three feet from the edge of the pool?
Throwing assists
Can you use a floatation device as a throwing assist?
Yes
What should you never enter the water without?(@ lincoln way)
a lifeguard
Resistance in the water can be ____________ if you pay attention to___________&________________.
1. Reduced 2. Relaxation 3. Body position
Ring Buoy
A buoyant ring with 40 to 50 feet of light weight line attached to it
In what stroke does the pinky enter the water first?
Backstroke
What is the one kick not recommended for treading? (Why?)
Flutter kick (b/c it expends too much energy)
Is survival floating on your front or back?
Front
Where should a student go for a tornado alarm or lock down?
Go into the middle rows of the locker rooms
Hiw should a rescuer lean when performing a rescue on the pool deck?
Keep the body low in reaching assists and lean back as the pull the victim to safety
Egg beater kick
Knees bent at 90 degree angle and lower leg makes circular motion. Provides continuous support b/c there is not resting phase. This is used in water polo.
Why is it important to master the streamline glide or possition?
Learning proper body possition in the glide contibutes to the establishment of proper body possition for strokes performed face down.
Whip Kick
Legs move up, out, together and move in a mirror image of eachother.
Scissor Kick
Legs move up, then put one out and one in front (running motion), then snap together. The same leg must always be in front.
Distressed Swimmer
May be too tired to call for help. They may be clinging to the lane line for support, or trying to swim to the side but making little to no progress. A swimmer in distress can turn into a drowning victim.
Shepherds Crook
Metal pole with a hook on the end. Best used if the victim is beyond 3 feet away and within reaching distance.
Can you hang from a diving board?
No
Can you move the fulcrum (wheel that adjusts the bounceness) of the diving board? (@ lincon way)
No
Can you run on the diving board? (@ lincoln way)
No
Do drowning victims call out for help?
No (b/c they are focused on breathing and trying to stay above)
Can you do back dives from the pool deck or diving board? (@ lincoln way)
No, front only
How many bounces can you do on the diving board? (@ lincoln way)
One
How many people are allowed on the diving board at one time?

Reaching assists
What rescue equiptment should not be used as a throwing assist?
Shepherds crook and anything like a paddle or towel
What stroke uses the scissor kick?
Side stroke
Freestyle (Stroke)
Stroke with high elbow recovery (elbows bent, finger tips enter water first), done face down in the water with side breathing and uses a flutter kick. Sometimes it is called the "front crawl" and is a competitive stroke.
Glide phase
The stage in the stroke in which the body keeps moving without any effort from the swimmer due to the power it built from the stroke execution.
How does a swimmer movements effect bad progress?
Their movements create waves in the water that add resistance to forward progress. This can be prevented by relaxation, body possition, and learning proper skill and technique for each stroke.
What are the similaritys between elementary backstroke and the side stroke?
They are both used for leisure and survival swimming, keep the head out of the water, and contain a glide phase
How could you use secure objects to help drowning victims?
They can be used as reaching assists. (Ex: towel, pole, oar or paddle)
What is the primary goal of a fitness swim?
To build cardiovascular and muscle endurance
Breaststroke
Used for leisure, survival swimming, and the slowest of the competitive strokes. It uses a whip kick as the swimmer is on front float. During execution of the stroke the body moves up and down. The order to the stroke is pull, breathe, kick, glide.
Sidestroke
Uses a scissor kick and used for leisure and survival swimming. The body is horozontal on one side with the arm nearest to the bottom extended over the head and the top arm resting at the side of the body, head out of the water. The arms come together and then extend opposite of eachother with the scissor kick, allowing there to be a glide phase.
Active drowning victim
Usually vertical in the water and unable to move forward to tread water; all energy is being used in attempt to breathe. They will not call out for help.
What is the body positioning for treading? (Horizontal or vertical?)
Vertical
What do majority of beginers beleive in the water?
You must stroke constantly with arms and legs to keep from sinking. But floating with correct body technique shows that water will support them with little to no effort.

Circle Swimming
a technique used for fitness swimming that keeps swimmers from running into eachother by always making sure you swim on the right of the lane.
Treading Water
a water saftey skill that expends little energy when done correctly with vertical body and thead and ears above the water. Used during water polo and in synchronized swim.
