Sustainable Development Goals

Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.

UNDP

UNDP works in nearly 170 countries as the United Nations' global development agency. UNDP's Washington Representation Office acts as a liaison between UNDP and the U.S. government, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, as well as academic, diplomatic and media communities.

ICJ

the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946.

Administration and Budgetary

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary), as reaffirmed by General Assembly resolution 45/248 B, Sect. VI, is the Main Committee of the General Assembly entrusted with responsibilities for administration and budgetary matters.

SPECPOL

The Fourth Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations is the Special Political and. Decolonization Committee, otherwise known as SPECPOL. Established in 1993, SPECPOL is the. combination of the Decolonization Committee (formerly the Fourth Committee) and the Special. Political Committee.

Legal

The Sixth Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly. All of the United Nations Member States are entitled to representation on the Sixth Committee as one of the main committees of the General Assembly.

Yalta Conference

a meeting of British prime minister Winston Churchill, Soviet premier Joseph Stalin, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt early in February 1945 as World War II was winding down.

NGO

a not-for-profit organization that is independent from states and international governmental organisations.

WHO

a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health. It was established on 7 April 1948, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Social, Humanitarian and Cultural

allocates to the Third Committee, agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect people all over the world.

ICC

an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal that sits in The Hague in the Netherlands. The ICC has the jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

Dumbarton Oaks Conference

an international conference at which the United Nations was formulated and negotiated among international leaders.

IMF

an international organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., of "189 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world."

Structural Adjustment

consist of loans provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) to countries that experienced economic crises.

Millennium Development Goals

form a blueprint agreed to by all the world's countries and all the world's leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world's poorest.

UNESCO

has 195 Members and eight Associate Members. It is governed by the General Conference and the Executive Board. The Secretariat, headed by the Director-General, implements the decisions of these two bodies. The Organization has more than 50 field offices around the world. Its headquarters are located at Place de Fontenoy in Paris, France, in in an outstanding, Modernist building inaugurated in 1958 and recently renovated.

World Bank

international financial institution that provides loans to developing countries for capital programs.

FAO

is an agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.

Economic and Social Council

is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the economic, social, and related work of 14 UN specialized agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions.

The Secretariat

is the United Nations' executive arm. The Secretariat has an important role in setting the agenda for the UN's deliberative and decision making bodies of the UN (the General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and Security Council), and the implementation of the decision of these bodies. Secretary-General, who is appointed by the General Assembly, is the head of the secretariat.

ECOFIN

it will deal with issues relating to economic growth and development such as macroeconomic policy questions (including international trade, international financial system, external debt sustainability and commodities), financing for development, sustainable development, human settlements, poverty eradication, globalization and interdependence, operational activities for development, and information and communication technologies for development.

Trusteeship Council

one of the principal organs of the United Nations, was established to help ensure that trust territories were administered in the best interests of their inhabitants and of international peace and security.

General Assembly

one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and the only one in which all member nations have equal representation.

DISEC

the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (GA). It includes all nations that are United Nations Member States.

Security Council

the United Nations' most powerful body, with "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security." Five powerful countries sit as "permanent members" along with ten elected members with two-year terms.

WFP

the food assistance branch of the United Nations and the world's largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security.

United Nations Charter

the foundational treaty of the United Nations, an intergovernmental organization.

UNEP

the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

IAEA

Set up in 1957 as the world's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field, the Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

UNICEF

a United Nations program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

San Francisco Conference

a convention of delegates from 50 Allied nations that took place from 25 April 1945 to 26 June 1945 in San Francisco, United States. At this convention, the delegates reviewed and rewrote the Dumbarton Oaks agreements.
