Many TV studios were now formed and reliably pumping out popular anime series covering a vast amount of genres. Mecha anime became popular with shows like Mazinger Z and Mobile Suit Gundam, these shows aired on Japanese-Community channels in the US, starting the US anime cult in the late 70s. Another popular series was Space Battleship Yamato.
What is an OVA (also known as an OAV)?
OVAs are special series that's stories are too long to be movies and too short to be TV series. They can run from 30 minutes to 2 hours traditionally, and they are not subject to public standards for TV, meaning they can be much more violent and sexual. Their licenses are also more affordable than those of movies or TV series. OVA's tend to be remakes of popular anime from 20-30 years ago as well.
