Intrinisic value of a sport
Would it be competing against yourself as much as competing against others? The notion that after you have achieved your best effort, you don't need anyone to tell you great job. An individual sense of accomplishment could be considered an intrinsic reward.
Lawerence Lemieux
a sailor from Canada competed in the 1988. He later said that he felt it was the right thing to do. -september 24, 1988 in Seoul olympics he was in second place halfway through the 5th leg of a 7 race series -conditions were awful wind was bad -2 comperiters were injured and with no hesitation he dragged the 2 people onto his boat -took them to a rescue boat before returning to the race -awareded the pierre de coubertin medal for sportsmanship -now coaches all levels -won 2008 achievement award

from Canada was competing in the Team Sprint which is a cross country ski relay race. Her pole breaks on a climb up the hill and Norway's coach hands her a new pole, she won silver and the norway dropped out of medlals

he is from Equatorial Guinea he competed in the 2000 Sydney Game -trained himself, fisherman taught him how to not sink -first time swimming a 50 meter pool in the olympics -had to learn by watching -south african coach gave him tips on how to breath and dive -was afraid -when he was about to go, his competitors jump in pool to early -> disqualified -so he went by himself -people cheering for him gave motivation -first person in his nation to compete -his time was no good though -people cheered for him still -he is now promoting swimming in his country and stop doing bad things

Manuel Machata
was a German bobsledder. He had some victories and world championship top finishes. For the 2014 Sochi Games he was not selected to represent the German national team. He, then, loaned or rented his runners to a Russian competitor. The Russian won the gold medal. The German team had zero medals from these games. They subsequently banned Manuel from the German bobsledding team for one year. He retired in 2015 and became the Chinese Bobsled Coach.
