Abuse or take advantage of the weaker or less skilled of the group.

Who is John Locke?
English Philosopher (1632-1704) Believed the main purpose of government was to protect the people and that kings should not have absolute power & deprive people of their natural rights.
Define social contract.
People are giving up their right to do whatever they want and in return they get the safety from their government.
Property
People need to own things to help them survive such as food, house, tools, land or ownership.
Liberty
People want to make their own decisions, and have freedom.
Life
People want to survive and be safe from any threat to their life.
What would happen to people's natural rights in a state of nature?
Peoples rights of Life, Liberty and Property would be in jeopardy. People would be insecure.
Where does the power for a legitimate/real government come from?
Power comes from the consent of the people they want to govern.
What also drives SOME people?
Selfishness or self interests.
What was the name of the social compact the Pilgrims had with the Strangers?
The Mayflower Compact.
How do people get the RIGHT to govern?
The people have to give their consent.
Why do people respect the rights of others?
Their conscience tells you right from wrong and it is your duty/responsibility to do whats right
What do people gain in a social contract?
Their natural rights will be protected.
What happens to people who are weaker in a state of nature?
Weaker people have more trouble protecting their natural rights.
According to Locke, are most people reasonable?
Yes.
What is state of Nature?
a condition in which no governments or laws existed at all.
