Indefinite Articles

A and an. Refer to something in general. Ex: AN elephant was in the circus. She is A dancer.

Common Noun

A general name for a group of persons, places, things, or ideas. Ex: They are adopting a calico KITTY.

Possessive Pronoun

A pronoun that shows ownership or relationship. Do not use an apostrophe with possessive personal pronouns. Possessive pronouns include its, you, their, theirs, his, her, etc. Ex: Is that dog THEIRS? Is the pen HIS or HERS?

Proper Adjective

A proper noun used as an adjective (i.e. describes a noun). Always starts with a capital letter. Ex: ITALIAN food, AMERICAN car, GERMAN hat

Reflexive Pronoun

A reflexive pronoun refers to the subject (what the sentence is about) and directs the action of the verb back to the subject. Includes myself, ourselves, yourself, yourselves, himself, herself, itself, themselves. Ex: The farmer made HIMSELF a shed for his tractor. Most candidates vote for THEMSELVES.

Proper Noun

A specific name for a particular person, place, thing, or idea. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter. Ex: GEORGE is naming his cat PUDDLES.

Adjective

A word that describes or modifies the noun or pronoun. Ex: The FAT cat sat on the GREEN lawn.

Noun

A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Ex: BETTY SUE is adopting a CAT.

Article

A, an, the - The most commonly used adjectives. EX: A cat ate THE tuna.

Concrete Noun

Names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses/see, hear, smell, or taste. Ex: I felt the cat's FUR. The BUILDING is large.

Abstract Noun

Names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic. EX: The cat and I share an unbreakable FRIENDSHIP. Claire's HEALTH was good.

Compound Nouns

Nouns made up of more than one word. Ex: CUPCAKE, KITTY CAT, BIRTHDAY

Personal Pronoun

Pronouns that refer to specific people, places, things, or ideas. I, we, you, it. he, she, them are personal pronouns. I ran fast. You caught the ball. If the pronoun does not refer to a definite person, place, thig, or idea, it is an indefinite pronoun. Anyone, everyone, both, somebody, and each are some of the indefinite pronouns. EACH wears a different hat. SOMEBODY needs to answer the phone.

Definite Article

The - Refers to something in particular. Ex: THE cat climbed THE tree.

Antecedent

The word that the pronoun stands for. EX: I ate a cupcake. I ate it. (Antecedent is cupcake.)

Demonstrative Adjective

This, that, these, and those. When they modify a noun, they are called demonstrative adjectives. Ex: "I want THIS cat, Mommy!" THIS plate is hot.

Demonstrative Pronoun

When this, that, these, and those are used alone, they are called demonstrative pronouns. Ex: THIS came from your house and THAT came from mine. THESE belong with THOSE. When this, that, these, and those are used to modify/describe a noun, they are called demonstrative adjectives. Ex: THIS book came from your house and THAT book came from mine. THESE shoes belong with THOSE socks.

Pronoun

Words used in place of a noun or more than one noun. Ex: The cat is sweet. IT is sweet.
