While there is a small pool of amino acids circulating in the blood, the body has no capacity to store excess amino acids. If protein intake is greater than needs, the amino acids undergo deamination which means the nitrogen group (NH2) is removed, leaving the CHO backbone. The NH2 goes to the liver where is made into ammonia. Ammonia is a toxic waste product and the liver can use the ammonia to make urea. Urea goes into the blood and if filtered and excreted by the kidneys. The CHO backbone can be used for energy and if the energy is not needed, it can be used for other compounds. But it is important to note that excess PROTEIN is NOT excreted by the kidneys. While there is always a small amount of protein in urine, large amounts, known as proteinuria, is an indication that the kidneys are not functioning properly.
