1866 First Amateur code, "gentlemen" participate as amateurs, they did not compete for money (only wealthy could afford), did not compete with professionals. A professional was working class(not gentlemen), "mechanic, artisan or laborer", not just strictly defined in terms of monetarily gain for performance. IOC declared an individuals cannot be a professional in one sport and an amateur in the other.
