Paris

Formerly called Lutèce, received its name from the Parisii, the tribe that founded the city over 2000 years ago. The city with its suburbs has a population of approximately 12M inhabitants. Paris is known as "la Ville Lumière"- The City of Lights. Paris is the political and economic capital of France, but also the center of French cultural and intellectual life.

Le Jardin du Luxembourg

Gardens located in the Latin Quarter with statues, a central lake, and an Italian fountain. There is also a puppet show (Le Guignol) and a game park.

Montmartre

Highest part of the city. It's known for its nightclubs just south (Moulin Rouge), artists expatriates from the USA, and the beautiful white church "Sacré-Coeur". Former starving artist-area of Paris. VERY touristy now

La Conciergerie

Housed aristocrats and "enemies" of the France awaiting trial and/or the guillotine during the Revolution. Most famous occupant: Marie-Antoinette

In addition to Napoleon's tomb, this monument contains an impressive military museum.

L'Opéra Garnier

Large, elegant theater (Opera /ballet performances) with a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964. It is known for its sculptured façade, grand marble staircase and sumptuous foyer.

Le Quartier Latin: Area home of students of all nationalities. The "Boul Mich" (Boulevard Saint- Michel) is the heart and soul of the neighborhood with narrow streets, bookstores and publishing houses.

Le champ de Mars

Le champ de Mars is a large public greenspace in Paris, France, located in the seventh arrondissement, between the Eiffel Tower to the northwest and the École Militaire to the southeast. The park is named after the Campus Martius ("Mars Field") in Rome, a tribute to the Roman god of war. The name alludes to the fact that the lawns here were formerly used as drilling and marching grounds by the French military.

Notre-Dame de Paris

Masterpiece of Gothic architecture (flying buttresses & gargoyles) this cathedral houses one of 2 Rose windows and is located on the Íle de la Cité. It begun in the 12th century and took 182 years to complete.

Le Louvre

Millions of tourists flock to this former fortress turned museum to see La Joconde (Monalisa), the Venus of Milo, the Coronation of Napoleon, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

Les Champs-Elysées

Most famous and elegant Paris avenue is used as a meeting point for Parisians.

Le Centre Pompidou

Multipurpose cultural center and modern art museum, this futuristic building features exposed pipes and structural steel. Best known for its modern art collection. It opened in 1977 and named after the former president of France, Georges Pompidou.

Les Tuileries

Once the private garden of the kings of France. Located between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde. Name comes from "tiles" once made from the clay soil originally found there.

Le Panthéon

Originally a church built to honor Sainte Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. Now, a temple with a crypt where French greats such as Victor Hugo, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Emile Zola, and Louis Braille are buried.

L' Île de la Cité

Paris was founded 2000 years ago on the present Île de la Cité (The Cradle of Paris). This area is the site of famous churches (Notre-Dame-, Sainte- Chapelle), historical monuments and is the birthplace, the heart and soul of Paris.

La Bastille

Prison attacked and demolished on July 14, 1789 is the location of the beginning of the French Revolution. Today, all that is left is a column topped with an angel, symbol of freedom.

La Seine

River that runs through Paris and divides it into two banks: La Rive Droite and La Rive Gauche where the "bouquinistes" (art dealers) sell used /unusual books, postcards, stamps, posters etc...

The Sainte- Chapelle

The jewel of Gothic architecture, is famed for its beautiful stained-glass windows. It was built by Saint Louis. (Louis IX). Located on Île de la Cité.

La Place de la Concorde

The largest and most beautiful square in Paris, with its fountains, Egyptian Obelisk, and statues representing important cities of France. Here hundreds of French people were guillotined during the Revolution.

La Sorbonne

The oldest division of the University of Paris, and a church used for exhibitions and cultural events. The "Harvard" of Paris.

Place Charles de Gaulle or Place de L'étoile

The place where L'arc de Triomphe sits.

La Tour Eiffel

The steel tour was built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the 1889 World's Fair. This monument is an important part of the French radio and telegraphy system. About 1000 feet high, it is truly the symbol of Paris.

Napoleon's Tomb

The tomb is crafted in red porphyry, and placed on a green granite base, it is circled by a crown of laurels with inscriptions, which act as reminders of the empires great victories. In the round gallery is a series of low relief, sculptures by Simart. A statue of the emperor, bearing the imperial emblems, is located at the back of the crypt.

L'Arc de Triomphe

Twelve avenues radiate from this monument which commemorates Napoleon's victories. The tomb of the unknown soldier of World War 1, with an eternal flame can be found there. Napoleon ordered to have it built in 1806.
