Changing from Active into passive voice

The object of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive senteces. The acive verb changes into a passive form. The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent in the passive sentence.

Active voice in present progressive He is painting the house.

The passive voice

We forme the passive with the verb to be and the past participle of the main verb. The simple present passive form is: am/ is/ are + past participle. 1.English is spoken all over the world. The simple past passive formis. was/were + past participle. 1. the project was finished yesterday. We use the passive when we want to focus on the action of the verb rather than on the person who carries out the acction. 1. the meeting was canceled last week.

agent in passive voice is mentioned when:

We introduce the agent (the person who carries out the action) with the prepotition " BY ". The agent is mentioned only when the indentity of the person is important. 1. penicillin was discovered by Alexander fleming.

By/ With

We use by + agent in passive sentences to say who or what performs the action. 1. These pancakes were made by my mother. We use With + tool/ material/ ingredien etc. to say what agent used. 1.These pancakes were made with flour, eggs, and milk.

agent in passive voice is not mentioned when:

a) It is Unknown. Their car was stolen yesterday. (we do not know who stole it.) b) It is Unimpertant. She was given a fruit basket as a gift.(It doesn't matter who gave it.) c) It is obvios from the context. He was arrested. (by the police - only they arrest people). When the subject of the active sentence is (people, one someone, somebody, they, he, etc.), we ofthe omit the agent in the passive sentence. 1. people speak English in most parts of the world. - English is spoken in most pasts of the world. Object pronouns (me, you, him, etc.) becomes subject pronouns (I, you, he, etc.) in the passive. 1. I asked her to read the book. - She was asked to read the book. When the verb of the active sentence is followed by a preposition, the preposition is kept inpassive sentence as well. I put him up for the night. -- He was put up for the night.
