Agriculture, industry, trade

Farmers produced surpluses of olives and grapes because the hilly landscape was good for growing them. They didn't produce much grain because the government would take it and feed it to the poor. Farming was not a good job to get into. Rome had mining industries which produced things to make pottery, weapons, metals, tools, and glass ware. It wasn't a good job to be a miner because the mines were not stable. They could collapse with you and all the minerals in it. Trade was good in the Roman Empire because people with enough money participated in luxury trade, trading money for items with value, ostrich eggs, ivory, blonde slaves from Germany, and gems. Rome exported their surpluses of olives and grapes, and imported more grain, exotic animals for gladiator fights, lumber, silk, clothing, household goods, marble, gold, and other types of wine.

Roman life with wealth, family, and religion

Wealth determined your social class, what you could afford and afford to wear. Rich wore togas, poor wore wool clothes. Rich lived in big houses, poor lived in crumbling apartments that had rats and easily caused fires. What social class family you were born into you normally stayed in, unless you married a little differently. The Roman religion was polytheistic and they prayed to different gods for different things, and made offerings to gods. They believed good or bad karma would happen if they prayed good or bad to the gods. Example: You would pray and make offerings to Mars (the war god) if you were going on a conquest. If you succeeded, Mars would have been pleased with your offerings, if you failed, he was unhappy.
