Photosynthesis
What happens in the calvin cycle?
-CO2 is attached to a 5-carbon RuBP molecule -this results in a 6-carbon molecule, accelerated by Rubisco -it requires NADPH and ATP -6-carbon molecule is made into carbs (glucose) and back into RuBP
What are the three parts of the calvin cycle?
1. CO2 fixation 2. CO2 reduction 3. regeneration of RuBP
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
1=light reactions/light dependent reactions. 2=the calvin cycle/light independent reactions.
What is the overall reaction for photosynthesis?
6 CO2+6H20==>6O2+C6 H12 06 light
What is photosynthesis?
A process that captures solar energy and transforms it into chemical energy that is stored in a carb.
What does light reactions produce?
ATP and NADPH
Which colors of light are most effective for photosynthesis? Explain why.
They are in the red and blue/violet range. This is because these are the colors that get absorbed the most by plant pigments, particularly chlorophyll.
How does this compare to the overall reaction for cellular respiration?
They are opposites.
What two products of the light reactions are used up in the calvin cycle?
NADPH and ATD
What photosynthesis waste product is formed in the light reactions?
Oxygen is the waste product in light reactions.
How many photosystems does light reactions use?
PS-I and PS-II
Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from?
The sun, or solar energy.
How can cells store the sugar that is produced in photosynthesis?
They are stored as starch.
What happens to the electrons in light reactions?
They're energized, and move down the electron transport chain. Then they pump H+ into the thylakoids, and are used to make ATP out of ADP.
What does PS-II do?
it captures light energy
What does PS-I do?
it captures light, and then ejects the electron which bounces around and produces NADP.
What plant pigments are involved in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and caretoniods.
Explain why chlorophyll appears green to us in terms of what happens to different wavelenghts of light that strike a chlorophyll molecule.
Chlorophyll is green because it reflects all the reds and blues of white lights, leaving green.
In what organelle of plant cell does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts.
What happens to water molecules in the light reactions?
It's broken apart and the electrons go to photosystem II.
What happens to carbon dioxide molecules in the calvin cycle reactions?
It's converted to sugar.
How does the amount of energy in light change as the wavelength increases?
Less energy is produced.
In which part of the chloroplast does each stage occur?
Light reactions happens in the thylakoid membrane, and the calvin cycle happens in the stroma.
