The top is the receiving face and the bottom is the sending face. Both the structures of the ER and mitochondria are specialized so there is increased surface area. In the mitochondria the inner membrane is folded which helps to increase the production of ATP. The ER wound throughout the cell, increasing the surface area so it is able to do protein synthesis faster.
