Physiology Exam 2: name 4 hormones involved in the hormonal control of metabolic fuel and describe what the target cells for these hormones is, the cells that produce the hormones, and what function changes in the target cells
where is glucagon produced?
alpha cells of pancreas
Where is insulin produced?
beta cells of pancreas
Name the 4 hormones
- insulin -glucagon -epinephrine -coritsol
How does epinephrine function?
responsible for fight-or-flight response. increases heart rate, relaxes muscles in lungs to allow increased oxygen uptake, etc
where is cortisol produced?
adrenal cortex
Where is epinephrine produced?
adrenal medulla
Where does glucagon target?
haptophyte cells (liver)
How does glucagon function?
increases blood sugar levels by stimulating the liver to convert glycogen into glucose
Where does insulin target?
liver, skeletal muscle, and fat cells
Where does cortisol target?
lymphocytes, macrophages, haptophyte, and bone cells
How does cortisol function?
primary stress hormon. Increases uptake of glucose into brain tissues and facilitates tissue repair
How does insulins function?
reduces blood sugar levels by stimulating the uptake of glucose into cells and converting it into fat
Where does epinephrine target?
skin, liver, heart, and lungs
