A thesis statement helps to address speech goals. It can prepare an audience with the speaker's general purpose, provide a specific angle of your topic for the audience to follow, provide structure to help the speaker organize materials and main points.
What are some tips for formulating an SP?
Express your SP as a statement and not a question, write as a sentence and not fragments, limit your SP to a single distinct idea, use concrete language, make sure it's not too vague or too general, and make sure your audience knows what kind of response you want from them.

Keep each point distinct from each other (mutually exclusive), Use parallel wording when working the points in to what you will say, make sure you can balance the time you spend on each point, always cover your main points in the same order

Main points should come from logically breaking down the topic into the major components or sub categories. Choose main points that directly support your topic. Assemble all the possible ideas and info that could go into your speech before finalizing your main points.

The PAO is what the audience should know, say, or do once the speaker is finished speaking. This determines the success level of the speech.

The SP provides the speaker and the audience with a specific angle of the topic by helping to narrow off/focus the main topic of the speech. It will be directly supported by the main points.

The SP should meet the requirements for your speech, be accomplished within your allotted time frame, be relevant to your audience, not be too trivial or too technical, and not contain any ethical or legal issues.
