A judge on the Youtube series Fascinating Facts, Dean Dennin uses science to prove that Santa Claus is more powerful than Superman. ----CRAYFIS - Cosmic Rays Found In Space, pioneered at UC Irvine, is an app that anyone can download. It uses sensors in smart phone cameras to create a planet-sized cosmic-ray detector by networking people's phones. ----Unboiled Egg - Biochemists at UC Irvine have pioneered a method to unboil eggs. By adding a chemical they can spin and unfold proteins that have clumped together. This technique could drastically reduce costs of cancer treatments, food production and other segments of the $160 billion global biotechnology industry. ----Nuclear Reactor - UCI has its own Nuclear Reactor in the basement of Rowland Hall. Able to produce 1000 megawats of power, this Mark I TRIGA reactor is only used for research purposes and specializes in Neutron Activation Analysis and helped analyze the JFK assassination bullet lead and many other samples since 1969. ----Center for Mathematical and Computational Biology - Using modeling and other mathematical applications, the faculty members in this group conduct cutting-edge research in many areas of biology and medicine, including stem cell, cancer, genetics, and cell biology. ---Center for Cosmology - Center members are leaders in research on neutrinos and cosmic rays, galaxies, and black holes. UCI Physics majors work with researchers on a variety of projects including: -Super-Kamiokande/K2K experiments -AMANDA-II neutrino telescope ----W.M. Keck Carbon Cycle Mass Spectrometer - This $2 million facility specializes in using radiocarbon as a tracer of the global carbon cycle which facilitates groundbreaking research in the Earth Sciences. ---- X-Ray Crystallography Facility - The purpose of this facility is to structurally characterize single-crystal samples of organic, inorganic, and organometallic compounds using x-ray diffraction. ----High Resolution Mass Spectrometer For Trace Gas Analysis

F. Sherwood Rowland (Chemistry, 1995) - Atmospheric Chemist, F. Sherwood Rowland, and his colleague, Mario Molina, predicted and later proved that the ozone layer (which protects the earth from ultraviolet rays) had been depleted by chemicals. Initially, the Chair of the Board of DuPont was quoted as saying that ozone depletion theory is "a science fiction tale...a load of rubbish...utter nonsense." Nevertheless, within three years, most of the basic assumptions made by Rowland and Molina were confirmed by laboratory measurements. They proved that the chemicals responsible for the depletion were chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). Dr. Rowland's research was instrumental in the later decision by DuPont, the nation's largest manufacturer of CFC's, to eventually end production of such compounds in aerosol sprays. In 1995, he was awarded the honor of Nobel Laureate for his work in this area. Following Rowland's work, the Don Blake lab analyzes up to 5,000 air samples a year from all over the world, including the Antarctic. Recently, they have embarked on a new field of research. For the past couple of years, their high-precision, non-invasive analysis of exhaled human breath has moved forward with studies involving several specific diseases, including cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pneumonia. Frederick Reines (Physics, 1995) - Dr. Frederick Reines (1918-1998) discovered the existence of the neutrino, an elementary subatomic particle-one of the smallest "building blocks" of nature; this led to his 1995 Nobel Prize in physics. The discovery of the neutrino contributed to the expansion of fundamental knowledge in physics and in astrophysical processes. In 1956, Dr. Reines and his colleague, Clyde Cowan, developed a method which detected and later proved the existence of neutrinos. In 1985, Reines received the National Medal of Science in a White House ceremony. Currently, the neutrino research is one of UCI's largest research projects. Irwin Rose (Chemistry, 2004) - Researcher in the School of Medicine was the recipient of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Along with Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko of the Israel Institute of Technology, Dr. Rose discovered a major pathway through which cellular building blocks called proteins are regulated by degradation. The pathway relies on a molecule called ubiquitin, which is critical for normal cell growth, and when it malfunctions, diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis can result. These findings play a key role in the development of drugs to fight illnesses such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. Dr. Rose will split approximately $1.4 million along with receiving the special Nobel Laureate Parking Permit.

What does LARC stand for, WHAT is it, HOW much does it cost, and WHERE is it located?

Learning Academic Resource Center -Provides students with two essential support services: workshops and small group tutorial sessions. LARC's mission is to create independent, confident learners by connecting successful students trained as facilitators with peers enrolled in historically challenging courses, and by providing creative study strategies and encouraging active involvement in the enthusiastic pursuit of academic success. LARC connects "what to learn" with "how to learn" in a student-centered, collaborative learning experience. -cost $110 -LARC is located on the 2nd floor in Rowland Hall (RH 284).

Dr. Francisco J Ayala was awarded

National Medal of Science in 2001

Explain our Human Biology major to a prospective student:

The Human Biology major is a pre-medical specialization available to students interested in learning about humanistic healthcare through three additional interactive courses. Each of these group-oriented courses focuses on a different category of disease (non-communicable, infectious, and nervous system), and students learn through problem solving in clinical appointment simulations and case studies while acting as doctors, patients, or experts from healthcare organizations. The major also incorporates socioeconomic and epidemiological aspects of medicine to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of the field.
