Rates, Ratio , Unit Rate Math Vocabulary 6th Grade
Ratio
A comparison of two quantities by division.
Tape Diagram
A drawing that looks like a segment of tape, used to illustrate number relationships.
Unit Rate
A rate in which the second quantity (the denominator) in the comparison is one unit. Miles per 1 hour, $ per 1 pound. ( y/x )
Rate
A ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units- miles to hours, feet to time, price to pounds
Linear Relationship
A relationship that graphs as a straight line.
Proportion
An equation that states that two rates or ratios are equal.
Benchmark Percents
Benchmark values that are sometimes used when estimating a solution involving percentages. The most common benchmark percents are 0%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.
scaling down
Dividing all numbers in a ratio by the same number greater than 1 to get an equivalent ratio consisting of smaller numbers.
Percent
Means per 100. A ratio comparing a number to 100. 45% = 45/100 = .45
Scaling up
Multiplying all numbers in a ratio by the same number greater than 1 to get an equivalent ratio consisting of larger numbers
Equivalent Ratios
Ratios that name the same comparison which means they are proportionate.
Convert
To change from one form to another
Double Number Line
a graphic diagram that shows proportional relationship between two quantities
Multiplicative Reasoning
a strategy that focuses on multiplication and division for comparison
Additive Reasoning
strategy that focuses on the use of addition and subtraction for comparison.
