Ratio

A comparison of two quantities by division.

Tape Diagram

A drawing that looks like a segment of tape, used to illustrate number relationships.

Unit Rate

A rate in which the second quantity (the denominator) in the comparison is one unit. Miles per 1 hour, $ per 1 pound. ( y/x )

Rate

A ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units- miles to hours, feet to time, price to pounds

Linear Relationship

A relationship that graphs as a straight line.

Proportion

An equation that states that two rates or ratios are equal.

Benchmark Percents

Benchmark values that are sometimes used when estimating a solution involving percentages. The most common benchmark percents are 0%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.

scaling down

Dividing all numbers in a ratio by the same number greater than 1 to get an equivalent ratio consisting of smaller numbers.

Percent

Means per 100. A ratio comparing a number to 100. 45% = 45/100 = .45

Scaling up

Multiplying all numbers in a ratio by the same number greater than 1 to get an equivalent ratio consisting of larger numbers

Equivalent Ratios

Ratios that name the same comparison which means they are proportionate.

Multiplicative Reasoning

Additive Reasoning

strategy that focuses on the use of addition and subtraction for comparison.
