What does the term sectionalism mean?
Sectionalism refers to how the North and South steadily grew apart based on their economy and view on slavery. People in each region were fiercely loyal to the region in which they lived, rather than to the whole country.

Why did many in the South demand a new fugitive slave law be passed?
The South demanded a new and stricter fugitive slave law to be passed since the fugitive slave law that was in place was not being enforced in the North. Slave owners were upset that when their slaves ran away, they often would not get them back since abolitionists in the North would hide the slaves.
