Financial Issues
Many schools have instituted fees for sport participation which has reduced participants by 30 percent Affluent communities can afford better facilities and coaches and avoid fees. Therefore more students canparticiapte in sport Epxenses been cut for interscholastic sports Not spending the same percentage on sport Spending more but not percentage wise
Olympic Promotion of Nationalism
National committees pick athletes to represent their countries. Ceremonies include flags and anthems. Athletes wear nation-specific uniforms and march behind their flags. Governments use Olympics to promote political causes (e.g., 1936 Berlin Games in Nazi Germany).
Host City: Why the Cost?
New Stadiums and athletic facilities Cost Overruns Direct operating expenses, including security Paying people to clean the e stadoum Infrastructure improvement May not be a facility or venue specfictly used for the games themself but its nesscary for the city to have them to be able to host the events New train lines, new bus routes, increase city water electrial gruide, hotels All this is nessecaty to keeping people safe and moving the millions of people that will come to the area Repayment of construction debts after the Games Almost all olympics games have a cost over run, they spend more than they thought they would, cities take out loans sometimes too

Globalization of Modern Sport
Traditions bean with greek civilization Sport expanded w brittish empire Nationalism emerged Dominance is shifting toward developing countries in certain sports
USOC's Athlete Development
USOC oversees identification of athletic talent, but no single system is in place. Training facilities are spreading from a few Olympic centers to smaller sites. USOC provides support and materials to develop coaching.
Coaching Intercollegiate Sport
Variations based on school's divisional status Experience in playing or coaching the sport Knowledge of NCAA rules (United States) (ncaa rulebook is thiccccc) Commitment to winning (without winning, not around very long)
Standards of coaching
arnt alot of coaching standards that are universal what may be good in one area may be very differnet in others -more than 3 MILLION youth sport coaches (mostly volunteers) -trying to get national standards for sport coaches -difficulty in defining coaching as a proffession -STANDARDS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE- ARE NOT UNIFORM-HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD COACH-TOUGH TO DEFINE*
Discussion of Olympic Motto
****The olympic motto is "citius, altius fortius" (swifter, higher, stronger)**** Olympic Prootion of nationalism -national committees pick athletes to represent their countries -it is not a standard for every country to pick their teams -sport governoring bodies have there own ways in the US -Ceremonies include flags and anthems -athletes wear nation-specific unifroms -government use olympics as way to demonstrate issues
Program Resources for Promoting Good Sporting Behavior
***there are programs out there promoting good sport behavior***** ***SPORTING BEHAVIOR** ***JACKIE SCHERILER WAS COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH WAS A COACH AT PITT AND TEXAS ANM MISSIPPI STATE ETHICAL BEHAVIOR/SPRTSMENLIKE BEHAVIOR: WHEN AT MISS STATE, THEY WERE GOING PLAY TEXAS AT THE END OF PRACTICE HE STARTED GIVING THEM INFO/LESSON THE MASCOT OF THE TEXAS LONGHORN (IT A MALL STEER BULL: ITS TESTICAL ARE REMOVED) JACKIE BROUGHT OUT A BULL AND HAD A GUY TAKE THE BULLS BALLS OFF TO MOTIVATE HIS TEAM THE PRESS FOUND OUT AND THIS BECAME A BIG DEAL. IS THIS A BIG DEAL? THIS BULL WAS GONNA GET ITS BALL OFF AT SOME POINT BUT IT WAS DONE INFORNT OF THE TEAM TO MOTIAVATE THEM*******
Ways to Improve Coaching
*depends on level of coaching* Preseason meetings for players and parents(giving parents and players the heads up about rules)(laying out expectations) Clear organizational expectations for coaches Training in effective coaching skills Effective procedures for filing complaints Consequences for inappropriate behavior
Sport as builder of character & morals
- *values can be learned through sport socialization - *factors related to sporting behavior include: sport type, performance level, position played -Performance lvel_what is the level you are competiting at -Position played-certain positions in a sport that lead to more unethical behavior
Pursuit of Medals
- U.S. dominance since USSR breakup - U.S. baseball failure to qualify for 2004 games (baseball & softball now dropped from Olympics) - U.S. basketball no longer automatic gold - china & other Asian countries vying for top medal slots ... 100 has had the most since the break up of Soviet I ruin Us baseball galore to qualify in 2004 games baseball and softball now dropped because not a lot of other countries were playing ***Us basketball no longer automatic golf medial 1972 Munich Germany US men basketball has not lost gold once In this gold medal game against Soviet Union, US was ahead by 1 point (no 3 pointers yet) Soviet Union had the ball and they couldn't score and US won but then officials put more time back on and Soviet's got the ball but didn't score but this happened again and sockets finally scored and won by 1 vote ****USC KEVIN JOYCE WAS ONE OF THE CAPTIAN ON THE TEAM AND THEY ALL REFUSED TO accept the silver metal because they get they were unfairly treated. First year we haven't won gold******* China and other Asian countries are vying for top medals China is closet to us for medals
Challenges Facing Future Coaches
- adoption of coaching standards by all organizations - mandated continuing education - national certification process for all coaches - public awareness of coach education and certification (makes it credible to them) -recruit and retain good coaches - recruit female coaches at all levels - ensure athlete's safety - develop coach recognition system based on criteria other than wins and losses - recruit minority coaches
High school sport & moral development
- athletes have lower moral development than nonathletes - female athletes score higher than male athletes, but their scores decline every 3 years - intervention programs can positively affect moral reasoning
Proposals for change
- decrease commercialism - eliminate nationalism - ensure drug free competition - decrease size and cost of hosting the event - increase security ... We as a society our level of patience has changed **how many seasons did john wooding coach at UCLA before he won his first championship LOOK THIS UP CAN BE ON THE TEST*******i think it was 16 years?
sporting behavior and mental toughness
- emotional control may lead to better sporting behavior - we must both learn the rules & understand the spirit of the rules
Sporting Behavior at Different Levels
- professional athletes are role models who influence young athletes - media & coaches tend to emphasize winning & competition ..........-tend to emphasize winning and comeptition - athletes need to be taught fair play, moral development, and character - participation sport tends to be more balanced
Development of Moral Values
- some theorists hold that behavior is based on moral development - Kohlberg proposed an age-related progression of stages
Coaching Youth Sport
-Care about athlete's needs and welfare -teach rules of the game and basic strategy **recognize the different characteristics at the different levels of coaching -create a safe and fun environment -understand both personal and skill development
Avenues for Getting and Staying Trained
-College (coaching education offered at nearly 180 U.S. institutions) National Governing body -Certification based on knowledge, skill, and competence -Geared toward a specific group National Agency -Human Kinetics Coach Education -National Youth Sports Coaches Association National governing body (NGB) Many opportunities for self-improvement
Coach Training: Youth Sport and HS
-NFHS coach education program -adopted by all 51 state associations (including dc)*** -Human kinetics coach education -SHAPE America -National Youth Sports Coaches Association
Problems with Relying on Volunteers
-Need for coaches is great, so leagues welcome volunteers -results in inexperienced, untrained coaches -even with training, turnover rate is high-- most people do it cuz their kids play -gives only short term benefit to knowledge base and then new coaches are needed -most youth coaches have to do criminal background checks (old days that didnt happen- scumbags would use youth coaching opportunities to get close to and groom their victims) -identify which level a coach is**
Existing high performance sport ethic per Coakley
-Striving for excellence -Competing to win -Sacrifice -Love of the game -Commitment to team -Playing with pain and adversity .... Wolly Pip like gave up his spot to some other guy that ended up playing like over 100 days straight Wolly pip was old guy so makes sense we dont know him He like gave up his spot for his pain and adversity
Coaching High-Performance Amateurs
-Teaching of fundamental skills -knowledge of both personal and skill development (could be you -knowledge of the mental side of sport -ability to communicate with parents and agents**** (if you are looking to become a pro, they often sign endorsement deals, manager contracts at early age-- important to communicate with both of them)****
Media Rights
-Tv rights 1992 summer and winter olympics were both hosted in the same year which is a huge undertaking so no longer do summer and winter in same years ***sumer games cost more to get the rights to than thwinter games ***we are a well over a billion dollars for the summer games rights for the past 3 sights *** this is just US rights***vancover was more expensive than some other country i missed that***
Governance of Women's Collegiate Athletics
-When was title 9 enacted into Law - 1972**** -1960s: division for girls and womens sports -AIAW (association for intercollegiate athletics for women) (1972 thru 1981)(were 2 different governing bodies for mens and womens sports) -1981: NCAA takeover of women's sport governance -TABLE 8.2*** -Division 3: you cant offer athletic scholarship**** Division 3 has the most votes (most voice) but they dont offer athletic scholarship- they shouldnt run the show!
Female Coaches
-bernadette lock-first female ncaa mens coach (assistant)** -there are more female coaches today than there were when title 9 was enacted in 1972** -bUT the % of female coaches has decreased*** -Ex. In 1972-1000 jobs coaching womens sports- out of those 1000 jobs, women held 900 But now, theres 100000 coaching positions, now theres 50,000 coaching (example- #s not real)
Traditional Description of Coaches
-conservative -clear concept of right/wrong -respect for tradition/authority -focus on development -behavior modeled on past coaches
High School Athlete Survey
-girls more committed to honesty, fair play - baseball, football, & basketball players more inclined to bad behavior - poor coach behavior reported by 25% to 33% - hazing, stealing, cheating okay with majority - inflicting pain okay with 60% of males (Was about inflicting pain NOT injury***)
Nationalism Vs. Economics
-historically international competition was driven by national pride -drivers are shifting towards economic model: -corporate sponsors -2004 US Olympic team sponsored by Roots (Canadian brand) -large income from tv network sponsorships
Coaching at the Pro level
-often need experience playing at pro level (get credibility and respect from it**) -most accept the business of sport and the commitment to winning (win or go home) -need to help athletes develop mental skills -big part of coaching
Should the media emphasize medal counts by nation?
...
strategies for good sporting behavior
1. parents teach values to kids at young age 2. coaches & officials prohibit play if rules are not followed 3. parents & coaches model good behavior 4. fans decrease rowdiness & alcohol use 5. professional athletes & organizations serve actively as positive role models 6. we all reward good behavior
Effect of the Olympic Games
2008 Bejingi China was all about how much it cost they had a lot of critisim because of how much money they spent when their people didnt have a lot of money and they got hate on the numner of their facilities they build for the games but didnt have long term ideas in mind aka those stadiums arent being used now 1996 was in atlanta 2004 was athens greece wanted to take it back to the first place Cost and lasting effect on host city Bejing sspent 43 billion dollars Financial and commerical influence on medi How much it cost for putting these games on and how much is being made 2 billion spent by NBC to broadcast in 2010 and 2012, 46% increase Rise and elite athlertes and focus on winnning Shift fromamateur to professional athletes Everyone wasnt playing by the same rules, soviet union best athletes were considered amamatuer to them Soviet union hokcey team was best in the world for years but they were also in the soviet union army so they were considered amamteurs because their main job was being innthe army We had our college players allstars play against them thats why other countries started a shift of using their professional athletes
Trends in Interscholastic Sport
All time high in U.S. participation in 2013-2014 of 8 million students (just raw numbers) State with the most is TEXAS *** Most popular sports (# of participants) (hs loooking at numbers, college looking at teams) BOYs: american football, track and field, basketball, baseball, soccer Girls: track and field, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball
American Influence on World Sport
American colleges and pro leagues attract many of the top athletes worldwide American sports in top 10 worldwide include volleyball, basketball, and baseball American families will go to extremes for a chance to play in american leagues Ex. doug allison- doug is originally from Great brittain, coaches at furman, played at USC- he was still so interested in playing in the US that he came here without visiting. He chose USC over URI, when he heard "south", he thought it was close to disney world. *
Cost of Collegiate Programs
Annual expenses accelerate faster than revenues (6% difference in 2011-2012) Athletics programs rely on institutional subsidies to balance their budgets Only 22 of the 120 Fbs schools generated more revenue than expense in 2011 and 2012 USC has a "rainy day fund" where we put some profit to use in the future USC athletics has contributed back to the school itself
International Travel in Sport
Athletes and coaches often travel, work, and play internationally Coaches are often hired to develop a sport outside their own country Agents often travel to watch athlete clients Constant touring can lead to strain and burnout Ryan stack**-played basketball here at USC, he played in NBA but ended up playing internationally (macedonia), b/c of that he was eligible to play on the macedonia national team. Would play on pro team in greece and during offseason he would have to practice and play w macedonia national team. Typical schedule included 1 month inUS. After several years of that it became very taxing. Wasnt great for family. \
The Drank Group: 7 Suggested Reforms for College Sport
Athletes must maintain 2.0 GPA No first year eligibility allowed Reform one year renewable scholarships Sport must not conflict with the class schedule Retire the term student athlete Remove special academic support Publicly disclose course information
Using Sport of International Understanding
Athletes of all ages have international competition opportunities international travel and competition increase appreciation of multiple cultures interactions between coaches increase world outlook between individuals **About Ryan Played 2 years in nba for cavs (sucked) Played 1 year in spain, 1 in israel, 5 in greece, finished his career by playing in ukrane Ties back to workers rights (we in us may take for granted) First exp. W/ culture shock was in spain: when he got there, he speaks english. No requirments that anyone on coaching staff speaks english. They allow 2 americans on the team*, 1 or 2 others (not from spain) on team. Language big difference**. ANOTHER big difference: if its not gameday, they dont heat the gym** At the end of practice, they cut the lights. If you wanted to stay after, it would be in the dark and with no heat. TRAINING METHODS WERE DIFFERENT: 2 practices per day, had full practice on morning of gameday. They practice really hard. First hour had no ball, just practicing form. TRAVEL: with cleveland, they had a jet and nice meals. Overseas, they traveled by shitty ass bus and the meal was a cold sandwich, hard bread, and a can of cocacola. GEAR: got 2 sets of practice gear, had to do their own laundry.
Negatives of Intercollegiate Sports
Athletic programs often lose money Programs are pressured to operate as big business Athletes are sometimes academically unready (Dexter manly) (DL for the washington redskins) (made probowl, very good DE) (got arrested for drug charges- it came out that he was illiterate even though he played CFB and played at OK state-- how did he remain eligible if he could not read or write? How did he stay in school? School did him a disservice)**** KNOW DEXTER MANLY and his story***GO SKINS Time demands affect athletes' grades and social life Programs sometimes engage in illegal recruiting Athletes can be isolated on campus (by having athletic dorm like 'the roost', it isolates them from other parts of campus life, missed out on college experience) Easy majors may be encouraged (ROBERT SMITH)*** played for the vikings, he was a RB at ohio state, was a serious student (wanted to be a doctor), had a very public disagreement with his coach, because he wanted to take science courses w/ labs he wouldve had to miss practice his coaches didnt want him to miss football *didnt shed good light on coaching staff and the university- coaches cared more about football that the kid doing what he wanted to do and further his education ***KNOW ROBERT SMITH Sport events can be treated as giant parties by students
Positive Effects of Participation in HS Sport
Better attendance Better academic performance Development of leadership schools Resistance to drug and alcohol use Better self image Development of leadership skills How much of it is due to sport and how much of it is due to the athlete themselves (practical reasons feed too- cause and effect)(do people with these values gravitate to sport, or do sport gives them these values?)
Socioeconomic Negatives of Participation in High School Sport
Better off socioeconomic areas have better facilities and resources Poor athletes may start behind Tensions arise between athletes and non athletes
KEY POINT*
Cause and effect cannot be determined, because athletes may already have key positive or negative traits before participating in sport
Negative and Uncertainties of Participation in HS Sport
Character development research is not clear Statistics omit students who cannot play due to low grades (ineligible kids cant play-skewed numbers) Participation raises tendency to binge-drink (lower frequency of drinking, but when they do drink a lot) Emphasizes athletics rather than academics Girls may struggle with conflict between traditional values and new opportunities
Current Description of Coaches
Coach profile has changed in recent years. --Less autocratic --More business oriented and team centered --Perhaps more tolerant of differences Assess your own personality and create a coaching philosophy. -coach is less autocratic, more business orientated and team centered, perhaps more tolerant of differences -asses your own personality and create a coaching philosophy -Ex. John wooden hated when his players took a stand on political stuff- much different today
Coaches' Possible Negative Influence
Coaching without training Punishing poor performance (proffessor didnt get to eat that day if they lost) Focusing on winning at all costs Instilling prejudice Inflicting physical or mental abuse
Coach Training: College and Pros
College: Most require coaches to have a degree and perhaps playing experience. Professional: Most require coaches to have experience in playing or coaching.
Interscholastic Sport and Community
Community programs often feed HS school teams The youth programs feed the hs teams-good youth can mean good hs More affluent areas have better facilities High school teams become more selective due to the talent pool, increasing competitive nature
Barriers to good sporting behavior
Emphasis on winning (by coaches, parents, in traditions & customs) - lack of necessary intellectual understanding for advanced moral reasoning
Sporting Behavior
Ethical behavior involves the following: Participation for the pleasure of a hard-fought contest Refusal to take unfair advantage Courtesy toward one's opponent Graciousness in both winning and losing - newer term (replacing sportsmanship) to remove gender bias - interchangeable with sportsmanship in this book
Coaching Interscholastic Sport
Extra job for supplemental pay (usually a teacher or admin.) Ability to teach fundamental skills Organizational and administrative skills (ex. Figuring out bus, sharing space for gym time, doing paperwork, ect.)(also working to make sure your athletes are elligible and in good standing) Knowledge of both personal and skill development
coaching males and females
Females and males look for similar qualities in a coach. Females are more motivated to improve their own performance. Males are more motivated to beat others. -IF THEY DONT WIN, MALES ARE MORE LIKLEY TO BLAME OTHER FACTORS INSTEAD OF THEIR OWN PERFORMANCE*** FEMALES ARE MORE INTERNALIZED ( BLAME THEMSELVES AND TRY TO IMPROVE)*****
US Issues of globalization
Football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and lax were uniquely from the US Interchange between athletes, coaches, and officials of these sports and of the traditional English sports promoted the globalization of both US and English sports
Sporting Goods and Globalization
Free trade agreements (GATT (general agreements on tariffs and trade) & NAFTA) (trade deals) Corporations are taxed at a much lower rate when they move products from country to country It is cost effective to sell large amounts of goods in wealthy countries and locate production facilities in labor intensive poor nations
Random Facts
INTERSCHOLASTIC AND INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORT (alot on the test from this class) Random facts: -10 fulltime female assistant coaches in the NBA** -Alot of them started in front offices - looking like the front office will be the natural progression -1 full-time female assistant coach in the NCAA (at Umaine)*
Political Structure of Olympic Movement
IOC oversees 202 national Olympic committees (NOCs). NOCs promote Olympic principles and determine how to select and send athletes. NOCs leverage nationalism. Like all human organizations, Olympics are inherently political.
Olympic Games
Increase communication between countries Attract huge audiences worldwide Promote cultural awareness Standardize rules in certain sports
Coaching Code of Ethics
national federation of state high school association code Each state high school sports have its own school association that governs the sport It provides information and guidance shares information, tries to do some training Not direct governing tho ****
Kohlberg's stages of moral development
preconventional(1. Punishment/ obedience 2.Pleasure/ pain), conventional(3. good boy or girl, 4. law and order) postconventional (5. social contract, 6. principles conscience) ... Kohlberg also said MOST OF US never reach post conventional level Even though there are ages when talking about it doesnt mean you will actually make it Pre and conventional is mostly about how we act, how does our behavior effect us Post conventional we dont really get thereKOhlberg because it doesnt bring us any personal benefits Take care of others and society as a whole rather than just worrying why it effects us only
USOC Structural Changes
scandals, then government intervention until 2004, 100 board members, now smaller committees, annual reporting current goals: -develop athletes at grassroots level - provide access to elite training programs - support Olympic athletes training and competition ..... Special Olympics are not part of our Olympics-had to ge approval to use the name Olympics United sets receives no funding from us government Other countries do tho Is olympic committees had some scandal of their own Us olympc committee when involved in voting to decide sites for competition they were low key directly bribing but at least tried to influence the vote by paying for children college Tutions paying. From family trips lots of shady thing going on 2004 some of this came up found up after Salt Lake City Winter Olympics 100 bird memebefs some of the reform after the government got involved and decided 100 people were hard to deal with too many people could get influenced so now is smaller committed and have to do annual reports of how money is spent
