Statistics 304, CH 1
Quantitative variable has two types
Discrete, Continuous
Ordinal level
Ranking can be made against a tag. Involves data arranged in some orders, the differences between the data values cannot be determined
Statistics
the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in order to make effective decisions
Population
A collection of all individuals, objects, measurements
Types of variables
1. Qualitative/attributive, 2. quantitative
Inferial statistics
A decision, estimate, prediction about a population based on a sample
Interval level
Applies to data that can be arranged in order. In addition, differences between data values are meaningful.
Quantitative
Information is reported numerically
Nominal Level
Naming, labelling, identification
Qualitative
The characteristics being studied is non numerical
Ratio Level
a level of measurement that has all the properties of an interval level scale and also has a true zero point
Sample
a portion, or part, of the population of interest
continous
can assume any value within a specified range FRACTIONAL
Types of stats
descriptive and inferential
Discrete
it can only assume certain values and there are usually gaps between values WHOLE NUMBER number of students (example)
Four level of measurements
nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio
descriptive statistics
numerical data used to measure and describe characteristics of groups. Methods of organizing, interpreting, summerizing, presenting data in an informative way
