describe manipulating power

Done through the media, where people are given different perspectives of the reality and therefore this may leads to the public agreeing with politicians when these issues are discussed first two faces describe how power can be used to overtly get someone to do something you want them to do, even if its against their will. This third face described how power can manipulate someone to do something they might not actually want to do by changing something they want

is the third face legitimate ?

FAR FROM IT

What does Steven Luke's believe in

He believes that power had three 'faces' or 'dimensions'. - decisions making - non decision making - manipulation

give an example of this

IN 1997 the SNP whose aim was independence wanted a question in the referendum on independence as well as devolution, but the labour government didn't allow it as it was not part of their political agenda.

is non-decision making legitimate power

NO, because politicians often follow their political agenda rather than the people they are representing. people don't know whats going on this can lead to demonstrations or groups opposing authority

is this open or closed face of power

OPEN FACE- because the public are aware of decisions being made and in some cases may even be allowed to vote in the process for example: the scottish referendum voting on whether to stay in the UK in 2014.

Describe the first face- decision making

The process of a law passing - government proposes to introduce a new law - they produce a bill which is debated - discussed in the media may attract the attention of pressure groups - bill may pass through the decision making process and become a law

CONCLUSION

This source of power can be described as the ability to influence behaviours of others, usual;ly through rewards or punishment. This implies having "power over" other people. This is different from authority: which operates through the right to do so. Legitimacy helps us understand the differences between these two factors and is therefore crucial for distinction.

Is this legitimate source of power

YES, due to that the public knows whats going on, what decisions are made and what is happening

Give an example of this type of power ?

feminists would claim that woman are persuaded that being a house wife and stay at home mum is thats best for them and letting the men go out and build their careers..... FEMINATZI POINT

describe non decision making power

it is the opposite to Lukes first face of power. May include that power to set the agenda of what is being discussed, or more importantly, what will not be discussed. this source of power is about preventing certain decisions from being made or limiting choices. it is excercied behind closed doors which is why it is known as the 'secretive face'

Disadvantage of non decision making power

politicians are elected, often make decisions in favour of themselves rather than the people they are representing.

what does Luke's say about this face

this can create false consciousness as the working class will be convinced that what the ruling class want is actually what they want too

Give an example of this

During a period of conservative ruling from 1979-1997 the issue of devolution wasn't allowed to be discussed in main parliament because the conservatives were opposed to it.

what are the advantages of decision making power

- public is made to feel part of the process - allows public to have more trust in politicians - believe that their voices are being heard
