nucleus

a dense area in a cell that contains nucleic acids- the chemical instructions that direct the cell's activity.

eukaryotes

organisms with cells that contain a nucleus

prokaryotes

unicellular organisms whose cells lack a nucleus. in prokaryotes, nucleic acids, the chemical instructions that direct the activity, are not contained within a nucleus.

Animals

-All animals are multicellular. -All animals are heterotrophs. -Animals have different adaptations that allow them to locate food, capture it, eat it, and digest it. -Animals live in many different environments.

Protists

-Any eukaryotic organism that can't be classified as a fungus, plant, or animal. -It is sometimes called the "odds and ends" kingdom because of the vast differences between its members. -Some are autotrophs, others are heterotrophs. -Some are unicellular, others are multicellular.

Domain Bacteria

-Bacteria can be anywhere. -Some bacteria are autotrophs, some are heterotrophs. -All bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes.

Fungi

-Includes mushrooms, molds, and mildew. -Some are unicellular, most are multicellular. -They are all heterotrophs, and feed off of dead and decaying organisms by absorbing the nutrients.

Domain Archaea

-Members of the Domain Archaea can live in very extreme environments, such as the ocean floor, or hot springs, or in a volcano. -Archaea are unicellular prokaryotes. -Some Archaea are autotrophs, some are heterotrophs. -Archaea are different from bacteria because their chemical makeup differs from bacteria, and so do their cell structure.

Plants

-Plants are all multicellular. -Are all autotrophs that make their own food. -Provide food for many land heterotrophs. -The plants differ-can be tall, short, flowered, not flowered.

How are organisms classified into domains and kingdoms?

Organisms are classified into a three-domain system of classification. The three domains are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their bodies.

Domain Eukarya

Scientists classify organisms in the domain Eukarya into one of four kingdoms: protists, fungi, plants, or animals.
