4. Fun, Play & Enjoyment

-A huge means of motivation for TR -Fun is a means to an end and a worthy goal -The debate: TR intervention solely a tool to achieve an outcome? Can the TR intervention also be fun and enjoyment and impact QoL?

3. Inclusion

-Empowering people with disabilities to be valued and active members of the community by making choices, being supported in daily life, and having opportunities to grow to their fullest potential -Social and attitudinal barriers still prevent full inclusion -TRs role is to advocate for equal access into a community

1. Right to Leisure

-Everyone has a right to pursue leisure -Access to leisure environments (transportation) -Leisure impacts QoL -Unique to TR when practiced in a health care setting -Leisure is self-expression, motivation, empowerment

3. Optimal Health

-Health is "a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being, not merely absence of disease." -TR supports whole person, not just disability or disease -Recreation participation contributes to a healthy lifestyle (exercise, socialization, motivation and purpose)

4. Quality of Life

-Includes physical and mental health, family and social relationships, level of independence, financial status, and loving situation -Meaningful leisure has a large impact on QoL -TR can influence the subjective and objective measures of QoL >Subjective: sense of well-being, socialization >Objective: functional status and access to resources

1. Humanistic Perspective

-Relationship between therapist and client is more important than the intervention -RTs must build trust and rapport

2. Ecological Perspective

-TR works with individuals, as well as the other aspects of their community (home, family, neighborhood) -TR works with family and assist with community resources

2. Autonomy

-The right to make one's own decisions, have choice, be self-determined -TR may be the only time someone has a choice all day
