r302 s. 3&4. No. these are specifically designed for goalies only.
player's blade falls out during play
r302 s5&6 if it is a skater, keep playing provided no danger to the skater. if it is a goalkeeper, stop play unless there is an imminent scoring opportunity.
can a youth goalie use a cats-eye mask?
r303 s. 4 yes, provided it is hecc approved.
goalie loses glove
r304 s.1 play should be stopped immediately unless there is an imminent scoring opportunity. if deliberate, this is a delay of game minor.

Procedure for a penalty shot
r406 Puck is at center ice. Goalie must stay in crease until touches puck. Puck must be in motion towards net at all times. Goalie can stop it in any manner but throwing stick (assessed minor). If goal scored, faceoff at center ice. Otherwise, it that teams offensive zone.
Penalty shot takes is distracted

can a shooter take the puck into thier defensive zone on a penalty shot?
r406s.14 no. once a player touches the puck, it must continue in the direction of the opposing goal. They are allowed to "wind up" in thier own defensive zone without the puck. (s. 13)

Boarding
r603 player pushes, trips or body checks an opponent causing them to go dangerously into the boards. This includes: Accelerating through the check to a player who is in a vulnerable position, driving an opponent excessively into the boards with no focus on or intent to play the puck, or any check delivered for the purpose of punishment or intimidation that causes the opponent to go unnecessarily and excessively into the boards. minor.miscon or major and game. auto major and game if player recklessly endangers an opponent. A match can also be assessed.
body checking
r604 intentional physical contact with the opponent using overt hip, shoulder, forearm or torso action. This includes physically impeding the opponent's progress for the purpose of physically forcing the opponent off the puck and with no effort to legally play the puck. A minor or major+gm penalty shall be assessed to a player who body checks an opponent in a competitive contact category or non-check Adult classification you can also assess a match penalty
what levels of hockey is body checking prohibited?
r604(a) 12 & under youth age classification and below, all Girls'/Women's age classifications, and non-check adult.
how is competitive contact defined?
r604(c) Legal competitive contact (occurs when players are focused on gaining possession of the puck and are simply maintaining established body position. This most often occurs when two players are physically engaged in front of the goal or along the boards. Competitive contact also occurs when a player has established an angle on the opponent and closes the gap to create an opening that is too small for the puck carrier to advance
What are the things an official should look for when determining whether a body check has "recklessly endangered" an opponent in a competitive contact category?
r604s.3 The degree of force, the effort to play the puck and the vulnerability of the opponent are all indicators as to whether a major plus game misconduct or match penalty shall be assessed for body checking in a competitive contact category.

If goalie is out of game, this is an awarderd goal. anywhere else - a minor penalty for delay of game.

tripping
r639 (note 1) the act of placing a stick, knee, foot, arm, hand or elbow in such a manner that causes their opponent to lose balance or fall
slew footing
r639 (note 4) the act of a player using their leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent's feet from under them. This is done by pushing an opponent's upper body backward with an arm or elbow and at the same time using a forward motion of their leg causing the opponent to fall to the ice. Minimum penalty is major and gm.
clipping
r639(note 2) the act of deliberately leaving the feet or lowering the body for the purpose of making contact with the opponent at or below the knees.
roughing
r640 player uses unnecessary force to push or shove an opponent or makes avoidable physical contact (non-body check) with an opponent after the whistle. a penalty for roughing should also be assessed to a player who uses their hands, arms or stick in a careless or reckless manner while delivering a check, or delivers an avoidable body check to an opponent after the whistle or who is no longer in control of the puck minor/double minor

Tripping signal
Strike the side of the knee and follow through once, keeping the head up and both skates on the ice.
Boarding signal
Striking the closed fist of the hand into the open palm of the other hand.

Tapping the elbow with the opposite hand.
are shot blockers legal?
Technically, no. r302(b), no additional equipment or contrivance shall be attached to the skate of any player or goalie.
Spearing signal
A single jabbing motion with both hands together, thrust forward from in front of the chest, then dropping the hands to the side.
Goal Scored signal
A single point, with the non-whistle hand, directly at the goal in which the puck legally entered, while simultaneously blowing the whistle.
Hooking signal
A tugging motion with both arms, as if pulling something toward the stomach.
abuse of official or other misconduct what is a match assessed for?
Applies deliberate physical force or attempts to inflict physical harm to any game official, including off-ice officials. Behaving in any manner that is critically detrimental to the conducting of the game, including but not limited to spitting at an opponent, spectator, game or team official, or verbally threatening or intimidating a Game Official, opposing Team Official or opposing player with physical contact or harm. Uses language that is hateful or discriminatory in nature anywhere in the rink before, during or after the game.
Checking From Behind signal
Arm placed behind the back, elbow bent, forearm parallel to the ice surface.
Penalty Shot signal
Arms crossed (fists clenched) above head.
Icing signal
Arms folded across the chest.
Coach refuses to leave bench after GM or match and directs play
Assess a bench minor for refusal to start play. Ask captain to remove coach. If still unable, rink security can remove
Washout signal
Both arms swung laterally across the body at shoulder level with palms down.
Timeout and Unsportsmanlike Conduct signal
Using both hands to form a "T".
High-Sticking signal
Holding both fists, clenched, one immediately above the other, at the side of the head.
where is the faceoff after offsides?
If it is carried in, the nearest neutral zone face-off spot. If it is shot in, the nearest faceoff dot to where the pass or shot originated. if it is intentional offsides, nearest end zone faceoff spot in the defending zone of offending team.
Butt-Ending signal
Moving the forearm, fist closed, under the forearm of the other hand held palm down.
where can a player bat the puck to a teammate?
Must begin and end in that team's defensive zone.
Misconduct signal
Placing of both hands on hips one at a time.
Second major in a game
R403(b) call is major plus GM, 2 game suspension. Substitute serves the major. If discovered 2nd major after being assessed, ref needs to give GM even.if after the game. If a goal is scored when should have had a GM assessed, goal still counts.
Charging signal
Rotating clenched fists around one another in front of the chest.
goalie makes a poke check to clear the puck, ends up tripping attacker. attacker falls on goalie
if goalie touches the puck first, there is no call. If completely misses puck, this is tripping. No call on attacker.
when is goal disallowed when it hits a ref
it must be a direct deflection and then in. If it goes off any other player or boards/crossbar, it is a good goal.
abuse of official or other misconduct what is a game misconduct assessed for?
r601(d) player or official: persists after being assessed a misconduct (player) or official continues after a bench minor uses obscene gesture anywhere in the rink before, during or after game. bangs boards, goal frame or protective glass in protest of an officials decision interferes in any physical manner with any on-ice or off ice official in performing thier duties, including resisting linesman during an altercation. Player's 2nd misconduct physically interferes with spectator shoots puck out of playing area during stoppage of play in protest of a call Attempts to intimidate or physically contacts an on-ice or off-ice official by throwing a stick, water bottle, puck or any other object in the general direction of a game official. Shoots the puck in the general direction of an on-ice official, or in the direction of a spectator during a stoppage of play, but does not recklessly endanger the person

A fight breaks out between two opposing players. The Referee rushes to the scene and from about 10 feet away loudly orders the players to stop fighting. The Linesmen have not yet arrived to break up the fight. Should each player receive an additional misconduct or game misconduct penalty for continuing the fight after being ordered to stop?
r601s.14 No. The spirit and intent of the rule is to assess the proper penalty in cases where the players have been physically separated and one or more players attempt to continue the altercation or one, or both players, blatantly ignore the instructions of the officials while physically separating the players.
What is the proper sequence of penalties to be assessed to a player who continues to verbally abuse an Official or who persists in disputing a call?
r601s.3 (warn) Minor, misconduct, game misconduct, warning to the Captain, bench minor penalty.
2 players circling each other, but don't actually fight
r601s.4 if the referee deems that penalties are warranted (taunting)could assess a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct
Attempt to Injure
r602 recklessly endangering an opponent or official or attempts to cause an injury(successfully or not). This type of infraction carries an automatic match penalty.
intentionally stepping on an opponent
r602s.2 this is an attempt to injure match penalty.
goalies breaks his stick. teammate gets a replacement stick from bench and slides it to the goalie. Is this legal?
r605 s. 12 Yes. the only issue here that would draw a penalty is if the stick is thrown in the direction of the puck or slides the stick for the purpose of distracting an opponent.
can a player receive a replacement stick from the penalty box?
r605 s.10 no. The player receiviing the stick gets called a minor for equipment violation.
How can a player/goalie receive a replacement stick?
r605 s.4 must obtain from player's bench or from teammate on the ice. Stick does not necessarily need to be broken to be replaced. s.5 goalie cannot go to bench to get a new stick. s.6 a new stick cannot be thrown onto the ice, this is a bench minor from throwing articles into the playing area.
can a player carry 2 player's sticks in order to give one to a teammate?
r605s.5 Yes. the player with 2 sticks cannot participate in the play while carrying 2 sticks, this would be a penalty for illegal equipment.
butt ending
r606 using the shaft of the stick above the opper and to check an opposing player or jabs/attempts to jab an opponent. this is a 5 and game, even if just an attempt. match if injures or attempts to injure.
A player leaves his feet and jumps at the last second to deliver a body check.
r607 s.1 This is considered charging. a minor and misconduct is assessed.
charging
r607 when a player takes more than 2 strides or travels an excessive distance to accelerate through a body check for the purpose of punishing the opponent. this includes jumping into an opponent to deliver a check. minor and misconduct or major and game. major and game or match if recklessly endangers opponent
bodychecking a goalie
r607(c) if the goalie is in the privileged area, body checking or charging a goalie is a minor+misconduct. If accidental and a bump, it is a minor penalty for interference. if the goalie is outside the privileged area, this is still interference or charging
attacker runs into goalie
r607s4. if not pushed by defender, the goalie is in privileged area, and an honest attempt is made to avoid the contact, this is still charging. minor and misconduct. If player makes no attempt to avoid contact, lowers shoulder, accelerating through contact, call a major and game. goalie can't abuse this an initiate contact, though.
Checking from behind
r608 a check is delivered to a player directly from behind, or diagonally from behind. minor and misconduct major and game when recklessly endangers an opponent, or causes them to go head first into the boards or goal frame, as a result of checking from behind. match if clearly checks an opponent from behind with excessive force while opponent is in a vulnerable or defenseless position, or the action is a deliberate attempt to injure an opponent.
checking from behind criteria for minor+misconduct major+game match
r608 s.1 minor and miscon - pushes opponent from behind or pinches player against boards. major plus game - forcefully checks opponent standing along boards with back toward the middle of the ice, when a player is thrust head first into the boards or goal frame, recklessly endangers opponent whether or not board contact is made match - if done with excessive force while player is in vulnerable or defenseless position. ,
cross-checking
r609 using the shaft of the stick between the two hands to forcefully check an opponent with no portion of the stick on the ice. Stick must be off the ice and there must be an extension of the arms (steering is ok) for this call. This still may be interference if the puck isn't there. minor. . major and game if recklessly endangers opponent .
can you cross check a player with the stick on the ice?
r609s.1 It depends. if the player has the blade on the ice for the purposes of playing the puck, no. if the force of the cross-check was to deliver a check with the stick and the player has both hands on the stick, this is a penalty.
goalie has the puck for a while, waits until opponent is nearby to freeze the puck
r610 s. 3 this is still a delay of game. had the opportunity to play it.
with the goalie on the ice, when should a referee aware a goal for deliberately displacing a goal?
r610 s. 7 There are three conditions that must be met. They are: (1) There was not enough time for the Referee to stop play for a displaced goal before the shot was taken, (2) The goal must be deliberately displaced by a defending team player or goalkeeper. And (3) The puck would have undoubtedly entered the goal had the goal not been displaced.

r610(f) if goalie (all) or player (excluding adult) does this, this is a penalty shot/minor option.

r610(g) this is a minor delay of game.
Team fails to place correct number of players on ice
r610(h) ref needs to warn. if still don't place correct # of players, this is a bench minor delay of game.
when should a ref stop play due to being trapped along the boards?
r610s.1 a player falls on the puck, is knocked down on the puck, or there is a player ready to deliver a check to vulnerable players along the boards. if no effort is made by one or both players, ref needs to warn to play. If not played, will need to assess a delay of game minor to player(s) most responsible for delay.
a player faked an injury to get a whistle
r610s.10 You'd know because player immediately gets up and skates away. this is a minor penalty for delay of game.
team warned about a slow line change, and does it again
r610s.11 according to delay of game, the team doesn't get another warning and this is an immediate delay of game minor.
goalie covers puck in the netting of the back of the net
r610s.8 this is a minor for delay of game. stopping play of the puck while in the netting is not in the act of playing goal.
entire scoring team, including those on the bench, comes onto ice to congratulate a player on scoring
r610s.9 this is ok provided there is no unusual delay and not for every goal..
Elbowing
r611 use of an extended elbow as the point of contact with an opponent while delivering a check, or as a means to create separation with an opponent. an attempted elbow is also penalized. this is a minor or major plus game if recklessly endangers an opponent.

r612(b) when stoppage of play is due to actions on both teams. it is the nearest face-off dot where the puck was last played. This applies even if penalties assessed to both teams & minutes are uneven.

r612s.20 faceoff is still in the attacking zone if the puck hit goalie, crossbar, or glass and goes directly out. this is an exception to the neutral zone faceoff when whistle is caused by attacking team.
proper faceoff procedures
r613 both players have no more than 5 seconds total to place their sticks on the ice, with contact with nearest white area of face-off spot and clear of the red center area. .

when is it a penalty for goalie to fall on puck
r613(c) minor delay of game if goalie falls or gathers puck: if behind goal line and body entirely outside crease, fails to play puck with stick when provided opportunity puck is outside privileged area holds pr places puck against goal frame, boards or drops puck on back of the netting. note -goalie is allowed to cover puck for 3 seconds before being penalized (s. 5). s.11 also, falling on the puck after a rebound is not considered falling on the puck - provided attackers are nearby.

Removing own or opponents helmet/facemask prior to an altercation
r615(c) If actions causes removal but not deliberate, this is a GM if deliberate, penalty is a match if you don't wear your own helmet correctly and it gets removed in an altercation, this is a GM

r615s.10 there is a minor for leaving the crease and a GM for first to intervene an altercation.

r615s.12 if helmet was not properly secured, the player who lost thier helmet is assessed a match penalty. If pushed off by an opponent, opponent gets the match for deliberately removing opponent (or own) helmet. if cannot be determined, the helmet wearer is penalized gmfor not properly securing helmet.

r615s.3 Player gets a match for intent to injure and a 5+GM for fighting. The general rule that you call the more serious penalty doesn't apply here because this is reserved for minor infractions (holding, elbowing etc.)

Fouled from Behind
r616 penalty shot/minor option to any player who is fouled from behind in a breakaway situation. This includes any infraction committed to an opponent either directly or diagonally from behind (beyond the fouled player's peripheral vision), that would normally be deemed a penalty. player must have possession and control of puck, beyond defensive zone, no opponent to pass except the goalie, and denied a reasonable scoring opportunity.
goalie is completely beat on a breakaway. No one between shooter and net. Goalie trips shooter

r627(note 1) deliberately using their skate(s) with a kicking motion to propel the puck or to contact an opponent. major/game if pushed off with skate on an opponent, match to any player who kicks or atttempts to kick an opponent.

kneeing
r628 the act of a player leading with or extending their knee outwards for the purpose of making contact, or attempting to do so, with the opponent. minor penalty, major/game or match for recklessly endangering.
player leaves bench to join an altercation
r629(a) this is a major plus game by itself.
player leaves the penalty box early
r629(b) if it was due to an error by the penalty timekeeper, the player shall serve the rest of the penalty. if player did it themselves, an additional minor penalty shall be assessed.
player illegally entered game (from penalty box or bench) and a goal for that team was scored
r629(c) the goal is nullified.
a player is serving a misconduct, and goes on the ice before the penatly is up. no timekeeper error.
r629s.5 the penalized team must put another player in the box. the player serving the misconduct must also go back and serve the rest of the misconduct after the new minor penalty is up.
offsides
r630(a) A player is considered "offside" when the player does not have skate contact with any part of the Neutral Zone or the blue line when the puck crosses the determining edge of the blue line. (Note) The blue line is always considered to be part of the zone in which the puck is in

r630s.25. yes. for adults and high school, there is delayed offsides. all other kid levels, this is immediate offsides.

r632(b) this is a minor for delay of game if this if the intent is to create a stoppage of play.
how long does a team have to place a missing player after a warning for refusing to start play?
r633. if the start of a period or game, immediately. if not immediate, a bench minor shall be assesssed. if still not put on the ice after 5 minutes, game is suspended and team official gets a match penalty. if during the game, 15 seconds. bench minor if not completed.
slashing
r634 the act of a player swinging their stick at an opponent, whether contact is made, or not. Any forceful chop with the stick on an opponent's body or opponent's stick, on or near the opponent's hands, shall be considered slashing minor penalty, major plus game or match.

when can a referee suspend a game?
r636 s. 3 other than refusing to start play or the lack of responsible adult supervision for the bench, unsatisfactory playing conditions. Examples: • ice melts • lighting • glass falls out/shatters and can't be replaced • a gate falls off or cannot be locked • time clock failure and no alternative timing means • outdoor weather conditions
can a team warm up thier goalie during the other team's time out
r636s.8 yes. there is no rule on this. any goalie warmup during a time out is limited to 4 pucks.
throwing stick
r637(a) A minor penalty shall be assessed to any player on the ice who shoots or throws any portion of their stick or any other object in the direction of the puck or to a teammate. if thrown at puck in defending team's zone, a PS/minor penalty shall be assessed after play is over. same thing with a throwing at a player on a breakaway. s.1 last player to touch the puck (in event of a pass) before stick thrown is the one that gets the PS. throwing a stick out of the rink is a misconduct, unless it's in protest of a ref's decision, then it's a GM.

r637(c) rule says no if minor or misconduct. Probably should have said major as well.

Match penalty
Immediate removal of player and a penalty depending on the period length as follows: 12 mins or less - 3:00 12 - 17 mins - 4:00 17-20 minutes - 5:00 affiliates can reduce the length of the penalties for all ages except adults. (follow whatever a major is)

No. only players on the ice at the time the penalty occurred may serve a goalie's penalty.

The non-whistle hand (open hand) and arm are placed straight down alongside the body and swung forward and up once in an underhand motion.
Delayed Calling of Penalty signal
The non-whistle hand is extended straight above the head.
Slow (Delayed) Whistle signal
The non-whistle hand is extended straight above the head. If play returns to Neutral Zone without stoppage, the arm is drawn down the instant the puck crosses the line, or as soon as the offending team clears the zone.
Head Contact signal
The non-whistle hand placed palm-inward to the back of the helmet.
Delaying the Game signal
The non-whistle hand, palm open, is placed across the chest and then fully extended directly in front of the body.

The palm of the non-whistle hand is brought across the body and placed upon the opposite shoulder.
Can a player, who is a ref, continue to ref after being assessed a match penalty?
Yes, unless match is for abuse of official. May not ref until hearing takes place.

no. r302. no penalty, and cannot cause a stoppage of play but ordered off the ice once play is stopped until skates are replaced.
