Waves-Science
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter.
Trough
A trough is the opposite of a crest, so the minimum or lowest point in a cycle.
In a time of one period, the wave has moved a distance of one_______
Complete wavelength
As the wavelength of a wave in a uniform medium increases, its frequency will _____
Decrease
If wavelength doubles, what happens to frequency
Decreases by half and the medium stays constant.
Wavelength
Distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it.
Electromagnetic waves
Electromagnetic waves are a form of energy waves that have both an electric and magnetic field. Electromagnetic waves are different from mechanical waves in that they can transmit energy and travel through a vacuum.
What do waves transport?
Energy
Crest
Highest point of a wave
Frequency
How many waves can pass a given point per second, measured in Hertz (Hz).
How can you change the speed of a wave?
Is only altered by alterations in the properties of the medium through which it travels.
Longitudinal Waves
Longitudinal waves are waves where the disturbance moves in the same direction as the wave.
What happens to the density of the particles when you change the tension of the rope?
Low tension means low density and vise versa. When the particles are closer together they are more dense and will transmit more energy than when the particles are less dense.
What do waves not transport?
Matter
Mechanical Waves
Mechanical waves are waves that require a medium. This means that they have to have some sort of matter to travel through. These waves travel when molecules in the medium collide with each other passing on energy.
List 3 types of waves from the video
Mechanical, transverse, and longitudinal waves.
How do transverse waves move?
Partials in the medium move back and forth at right angles to the direction of the wave.
Explain why the slinkies reach the wall when they do
The amplitude of a wave does not affect the speed at which the wave travels.
What is a medium?
The matter in which waves travel through and can be a solid, liquid, or gas, or a combination.
How does the medium of a wave impact the frequency and wavelength?
The medium of the wave does not impact the frequency and wavelength. For example, on slide twenty the speed of the wave lab shows that tension doesn´t affect the frequency or the wavelength but does affect the speed of the wave. The speed of the waves in rows 6-8 is different because the tension of the rope changes. In rows 6-8 the tension is significantly higher. Waves travel through tighter ropes at higher speeds. The wavelength and frequency remain the same when going through different mediums. The speed of a wave is not dependent upon the properties of the wave. The speed of the wave is dependent upon the properties of the medium which is the tension of the rope.
The speed of a wave depends upon _____
The properties of the medium through which the wave travels.
Transverse Waves
Transverse waves are waves where the disturbance moves perpendicular to the direction of the wave. You can think of the wave moving left to right, while the disturbance moves up and down.
Wave Medium (Media)
Wave medium is the substance that carries a wave (or disturbance) from one location to another.
Combining this information with the equation for speed (speed = distance/time), it can be said that the speed of a wave is also the _____
Wavelength/period
What do you notice about the data?
When frequency increases, wavelength decreases by half.
Explain what happens to wave speed when tension increases?
When the tension of the wave increased the speed of the wave increased.
Does it take more energy to produce a higher amplitude, or less?
When you increase the amplitude of the wave the device uses more energy to produce a higher amplitude and vise versa.
A medium is a
substance a wave travels through. Example: Ocean waves travel through water (liquid). Sound waves travel through air (gas).
Lambda
represents wavelength
Wave length is the
the distance a wave travels in a given amount of time, such as the number of meters it travels per second.
What is the wave speed equation?
v = f x λ
What causes waves?
when a source of energy forces the matter in a medium (solid, liquid, gas) to vibrate.
Oscillate
which means to move back and forth in a regular, repeating way. This fluctuation can be between extremes of position, force, or quantity. Different types of waves have different types of oscillations. Longitudinal waves: Oscillation is parallel to the direction of the wave.
Explain why changing the frequency of a wave, does not change the speed of the wave.
(blank) does not affect wave speed. An increase in wave frequency caused a decrease in wavelength while the wave speed while it remains constant
As the wavelength of a wave in a uniform medium increases, its speed will_______
Stay the same
low temperature
higher density. When the object is colder the particles are closer together and are denser than when they are farther away.
Amplitude
is the distance from the center line (or the still position) to the top of a crest or to the bottom of a trough . Be careful with this quantity - the center line is not always given in a diagram.
Density
mass of a unit volume of a material substance. The formula for (blank) is d = M/V, where d is (blank), M is mass, and V is volume
The speed of most waves depends on the
medium, or the matter through which they are traveling. Generally, waves travel fastest through solids and slowest through gases.
