How does a thermometer work?
As the thermometer heats up, the fluid expands and moves up the thermometer. As it cools down, the fluid contracts and moves down the thermometer(They used to use Mercury but they found out it was toxic and stopped using it)
Why are weather balloons important? And what information do they give that isn't obtainable in other ways?
It basically is a weather station but in the sky. They transmit the information they collect with a radio back down on the ground. Balloons usually burst at around 25 miles high. The supplies are not recovered.
No rain is in the forecast, but it's pouring outside. How could the NWP weather forecast have missed this weather event?
Not enough data was initially entered. The computer program makes certain assumptions about how the atmosphere operates. The weather system may be too small to show up on the grid. There is always the possibility that conditions change unpredictably.
Discuss the role of satellites and computers in modern weather forecasting.
Satellites look over the Earth and can show us storms and sometimes notify us on atmospheric conditions. Computers receive transmissions from radios in weather stations and balloons and more which can be very useful to piecing together a forecast.
What type of weather satellite is best to use for monitoring hurricanes that may cause problems in the United States and why?
The Geostationaries would be more ideal for monitoring hurricanes in America, because they are solely focused on the US land/seas which would ensure they don't miss any hurricanes.
How does radar work, and what is its value in weather prediction?
They are basically like bats. They send out radio waves and they get sent back when they bounce off of the nearest thing, like rain!
Describe how meteorologists develop accurate weather forecasts.
They can use several methods, depending on an average from those methods and looking over it several times the weather forecast is born!
What does it mean to say that weather is a chaotic system?
Weather is very unpredictable and unorganized. A very small change can have a big effect.
How could a barometer predict an approaching storm?
When the barometer falls it means that a storm is approaching.
What is the difference between the polar orbiting and geostationary?
While polar orbits have an inclination of about 90 degrees to the equator, geostationary orbits match the rotation of the Earth. ... Out of the three types of orbits (low, medium and high Earth orbits), polar orbits often fall into low Earth orbits.
