Predestination
1. Predestination was a teaching that explains: "God decided at the beginning of time who would be saved and who damned." This was so that people could not actively work to achieve salvation.
Protestant
1. Protestant means "a follower of Luther." This word usually applied to all of the non-Catholic western European Christians.
Diet of Worms
1. The Diet of the Worms was an assembly that took place in the city of Worms in 1521. This was where Martin Luther refused to recant his writings.
Witch-hunts
1. Witch-hunts campaigned against witch craft in Europe and European colonies during the sixteenth and seventeenth century. This was a period in time where mostly women were tried, and many of them were executed for witch-craft.
Christian Humanists
Christian Humanists were people who came from Northern Europe who believed that Christian cultures should be combined into one.
Huguenots
Huguenots were French Calvinists.
Humanism
Humanism is a word to describe the study that the Italians began of Greek and Latin literature, with the goal to understand human nature.
Jesuits
Jesuits were members of the Society of Jesus. Their goal was to spread Roman Catholic faith through schools and missionary activity
Indulgence
Like many other religions, this was a document that was created by the pope which held earthly penance and or time in purgatory.
Patronage
Patronage is a way of financial support for writers and artists.
Politiques
Politiques were people who sought to end religious violence in France. They attempted to do so by restoring a strong monarchy grating official recognition
Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation was a religious reform, and split the Western Christian Church.
Debate about Women
The debate about women was an event that took place during the Renaissance. This debate was based on a women's character, nature, and role in society.
Renaissance
The word "Renaissance" came from the French language. This word means rebirth. Renaissance is a word to describe a period in time in Europe that occurred during the fourteenth century.
